A simple idea. Suppose proficiency was changed so that it improved damage against the opposite tank? ie: Plasma Rifle proficiency would improve its damage against armor?
Just an interesting thought.

Many people refer to the AR as the plasma rifle, which is acurate since it is a hybrid blaster that fires plasma.

A laser rifle with maxed out proficiency using your suggestion would have +20% damage against shields and -5% damage against armor... The proficiency skill should make weapons better at killing what they were meant to kill (hybrid - blaster and laser: shield / hybrid - rail, projectile: armor), not make them well-rounded.

weapon with damage 30 : profile +10% shields -10% armor 30 x 0.9 = 27 , 27 x 1.15 = 31.05 30 x 1.05 = 31.5 <- Your math
Just pointing out the flaw.

Who says we have to keep it at 3% per level?

The point is more that gallente and caldari are balanced against each other.
Gallente are rigged to breach shields (caldari). So their proficiency makes more sense enhancing breaking shields.
Minmatar are rigged to tear armor because amarr use armor. Their high movility is to allow them more maneuverability to kill amarr and smash their armor. It makes more sense for the CR to have higher efficacy versus amarr armor than caldari shields.
The story is told in faction warfare.
Its always Gallente vs Caldari and Amarr vs. Minmatar. Racial weaponry is balanced accordingly. |

This would just push for a further need to hybrid tank, which is bad.
At least now an armor tanker can take solace in the fact that they'll do well against a Laser weapon, or a shield user will do well against an explosive weapon. Pushing proficiency to increase the 'lesser' part of the damage profile simply normalizes damage types to be more neutral, and in turn makes their meaning and purpose lessened.
I can understand your thought process, but I think it would be more of a negative than a positive. |

I'll admit I had a similar thought with modules boosting shield or armor damage, but after talking about with a bunch of people I was convinced that it had a couple problems like the ones I listed. Even so good to see people thinking of ideas and working to be constructive, I prefer threads like this over the bitter vet ones
Keep up the good work |
