People like the ability to customize their suit to how they see fit, and STD (and some ADV suits) don't have slots which allow them to do that. For example, a good melee suit can be made with Assault mk.0, but you'll fail terribly if you try using it with Assault M-1 or Assault M/1-Series.
Then, there are some who use it for the cosmetic features. Though that seems a bit counterproductive considering how you can't see anything beyond your hands in most situations, as this is an FPS title.
We do it because we want other people to see our badassness.
