Hello Abber! As you can see from the "individual" points of view in these posts, the subject of 'Dropsuits' Better-to-Best' is a risky subject. Dust is deliberately set up to LIMIT your progress by attaching ISK price to everything you want, and then creating a battlefield so diverse that you are RISKING whatever gear/dropsuits you decided on still being weak and getting destroyed. MOST fps games on consoles don't do that. In most fps games, you pick a suit... it is already designed to be great at that Role you've chosen in combat, and the rest of your success is up to you.
Dust DELIBERATELY does it differently: Dust makes its Spec-suits as imperfect and non-role as the Basic-suits. Ignore the spec-names "commando suit", "sentinel suit",... an advance basic suit may the the perfect suit for your behavior in the fight.
If you know your personal playing style, there are a few suits that, when fitted with the modules you need for your playstyle, are the BEST.
Here's what I mean: I have no use for any specific role or prototype suit. But I know that I am slways a Droship driver, soI will only be groundfighting IF I get shot down. When I do get shot down, I only want to stay alive and walk back to a safe area where I can call in a new dropship and get back in the air again. I need to decide, "when you get shot down, Celesta, to survive do you plan to... (1) Run quickly and dash from cover to cover through even heavily infested enemy?... or (2) Hunker down in a room where it's safe and move only when I feel I there are friendlies nearby I can find protection with?... Yes, I'm a proud COWARD, LOL!
If it's Plan #1, I use a Proto Gallente SCOUT suit. No, I'm not scouting, but the suit's dampening bonuses minimizes my chance of being scanned, and it's sprint bonus keeps me running fast (...the plan is to get caught in only ONE shootout, or even better--no shootoutsat all). If it's Plan #2, I use an advanced Caldari BASIC suit. No bonuses, but enough slots to stack enough shield/armour and proto weapons to survive MORE than one close-up shootout with enemy who's lucky enough to walk passed the place I'm hiding (...shotgun and Proto Scrambler pistol ready).
Notice, I didn't say I am a "pilot", or my style is "medic", or "I like to support with an HMG". Plan #1 and #2 are my WAY of doing things during the match. Not a "Role" really, like 'being a commando who uses knives', but a WAY of getting through the match like 'I will stay in an LAV as my protection, and when I get out to fight, it will be in tight spaces where I can't retreat, so no need to waste money on fast suits or sheild-bonus suits".
The early dropsuits are cheaper because, hopefully you'll stick with THEM while you're still trying to fully determine YOUR WAY of gameplay. Of course, once you've defined your gameplay "way", and reach for that advanced suit to build for yourself,.... THAT'S when CCP puts the big price tag on the suits you'll be picking,... to increase the RISK factor. This game IS about RISK.
It's like saying, you'd better be right about your personal playstyle, because if you're wrong it's gonna cost you!!
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...
