Back in Jan, 11th 2013 this game was hit with an interesting patch. For some reason CCP decided to not announce this change until the release day of open beta. The old skill tree for support and core skills, such as shield, fittings, armor, ect. was split into two separate skill trees. One skill tree for Vehicles and one for Dropsuits.
Now I'm not sure why CCP asked me to test this game back in closed alpha when the MCCs flew across the battlefield. I assumed it was to give CCP feedback to help with the direction of the game, but I can tell you I've been active on these forums since day 1 and not even a single dev or player ever mentioned changing the skill system. On the day of open beta we log in to find two skill trees where there used to be a single one.
I find all of the changes we've been seeing recently clearly show Legion development more openly taking priority over Dust. I won't be surprised to see a 2 light weapons medium Assault suit within the new few months and other changes like swapping dropsuit slots layouts to match eve lore.
I want to mention I'm totally in support of this direction. Work on dust shouldn't just be wasted, splitting the dev team into two projects makes it take twice as long for both games to be produced. Dust 514 as it currently stands is the perfect platform to get the balance in Legion just right. It hurts both dust and Legion if CCP is working on both titles by assigning separate dev teams.
Fusing the skill trees for core skills into a single tree isn't a new proposal, all I'm asking for is a rollback on the skill tree. I know Legion will be the same way if they really want it to feel more like Eve. Unless they get rid of the skill tree which I hope is just a misquote...
Pros and Cons to current system pros
- Allows for deep specialization into dropsuits or vehicles
- Makes the game appear to have more depth
cons Overnight announced patch doubled the skill investment
Dropsuit players only have core skills in dropsuits
Vehicle players only have core skills in vehicles
Makes creation of pilot suit kinda a nightmare to design
[*] Forces players into a single role on the battlefield, at least for the first year of playing.

I agree. They should make the MCC's move around the battlefield then it can get rid of the ugly Redline.

No.
You want a bunch of scrubs running around in tanks without even being good at it? Sounds like 1.7 all over again.

Im not sure if I'm confused or if you are?
Also to the OP. I believe if memory serves (and this was over 2 years ago mind you) We originally started with split skill trees, they then fused them, then split them again at Uprising. So in reality, we already have rolled back to the original plan. I personally agree with the current system, I think it makes more sense. But I do understand where you're coming from, I just don't agree.
Like my ideas?

Isn't that the point of the pilot suit and the skills for tanks/ LAVs/Dropships?

It was silly to be able to have a maxed core suit...and immediately jump into a maxed core tank or DS or LAV. The specialization makes sense, You have to sacrifice effectiveness either on the ground or in the cockpit for quite awhile. My Vehicle character has 20 mil, and about 1 mil of it is infantry based, my Main infantry character has 30 mil, with NO vehicle SP. (although I do have BPO modules so I can run super cheap vehicles if I feel the need). Being able to excel at both should take considerable investment.
Observe the public trust. Protect the innocent. Uphold the law.

I don't work for CCP, but I'm pretty sure that the skills are not meant to carry terrible pilots. You just don't understand there's gamers out there that have built up quite a lot of experience in the time Dust has been available for play, and wanting to put the least amount of effort possible into trying to destroy them just won't work.
Their experience, situational awareness and placement easily beats your complete lack of critical thinking into how to tackle a problem. What you and your legions of dolts on here do to vehicles as a whole is akin to communities moving their local sports teams over time from competitive teams striving for a championship, to completely friendly non-competitive pick-up games in which everybody gets a ribbon for participation.
Constantly dumbing something down doesn't show a problem with anything being too much to destroy, it distinctly and clearly shows a lack of ability on those that need to keep getting whatever it is nerfed. |

But really though, CCP didn't even ask the playerbase for feedback or say a word in the patch notes. What's up with that. Just one day, POOF you gotta train engineering twice, deal with it.

But this seems more like an arguement for spilting up thecore skills in eveonline to
Frigate core skills Cruiser core skills Battleship core skills
But it's all the same skills, it's not like it was separated into two skill trees to introduce more variation and specialization.
It really feels like CCP only spilt them up to artificaly increase the overall training time so they could boast 5 years of skill training. But now we've got over 9 years in this game, that's enough.

Not true, all of those are still space ships. Light suits, med suits, heavy suits
But vehicles in dust are a beast all their own.

My assumption has always been that DUST mercs operate vehicles essentially as giant exo-suits. They're basically just up-armoured, up-gunned dropsuits.
It would seem like wisdom, but for the warning in my heart...
