I was just looking eve offline and saw how many new players joined the game in the past hour and though how little of them stay. So I suggest giving new players bonuses and better tutorials.
New players need to be able to learn how exactly dust works, things such as setting up a suit, flying a drop ship, scouting, setting up a vehicle, using equipment, how amrour and shields work, the tier types, skill bonuses and pg/CPU are all alien things, that need deep explaining to them for them to be able to get into the game. I suggest these be community made, as the community knows how to do these things much better and this would put pressure off ccp.
A new player would get a bonuses to multiple things such as : a 10% bonus to damage, 20% bonus to hacking, a 15% to max sheild and armour and a20% bonus to sp gathered. These bonuses would slowly reduce the more sp the player got and eventuly the bonuses would be entirely gone, but at this time the player would have enough sp to not need the bonuses to be able deal with hardened vertains and FOTM players.
The only other thing I would suggest would be ranked matches, though I see this would cause a lot of complications and would require a lot of time and effort to establish.

There are still people dumb enough to think that creating an alt and farming Academy is easy money. (If you just keep running that character in ambush with [STARTER FIT]s you don't have to wait on Biomassing. You just have yo get over the fact that you will lose horribly outside of Academy and have fun with it.)

Idk about bonuses, just need more of a separation betweens the vets and the low sp peoples, rather than them getting roflstomped every damn match....then they might stick around n set down some roots rather than just go "**** this spawn then die in less than a minute cycle"

No (utterly useless) Academy. Just deploy and figure it out on your own. It sucked. That's why I stuck around. I don't play easy games. **** Nintendo-minded Care Bears and the need to coddle people like they're premature crack babies.

Pulling the plug on Scotty would go a long way to helping retain new players. Matchmaking has been utter sh!t since Scotty was implemented and it's really sad that we had more balanced matches when we were randomly thrown into matches than we have had since actual matchmaking has been implemented. I remember when we used to have more matches with good players on both teams than we had matches where one team is full of proto squads and the other team is full of random newberries with one or two good players. Now finding a balanced match is as rare as finding a Minmatar heavy (I can only recall seeing 2 since the suit update) and it's because of Scotty.
Can't say I'm all that surprised.
I've been drinking and may be drunk.... probably like most dust players.

It's true steel sharpens steel. specially in DUST. but there are ways to make player groups starting DUST happy.
I strongly feel players 5 million skillpoints and below should be segregated from the general population. But they should also have the ability to join a squad via squad finder, friends, and corporation that will allow them to be part of the general population ques for public or whatever matches.
Much like being able to pull in a DUST player from anywhere into your corporations PC.
Then only allow squads in which every player is at or below 5m skill points to actually Que up for the Training grounds.
Then it's trying to setup an intuitive quest and achievement system around the training and walk through of the NPE that DUST could have. the ability to take a player by the hand and walk them through DUST.. and have an avenue for players to skip it if they so choose.
Every new player in DUST should be exposed to some training and USE around; Skills and skillpoint allocation, Nanohives, Nanite injectors, Uplinks, Repair tools, Different weapon sizes, Different fitting loadouts, MLT tanks, MLT Dropships, MLT LAV's, Precision and Dampening modules and the effects. Scanners, Different MLT Suit Sizes, The Squad Finder, Corporations and the benefit,
Currently all players have is an EXTREMELY limited bare bare example of a quest system.. and a Wall of Text to greet them. The entire pride in the way CCP present's their product to a perspective new customer is just....Atrocious., And should be something they are embarrassed about, and would want to fix if it was going to continue to represent CCP Shanghai as a development studio.
*P.S* The whole concept of PVE is stupid for training people.. If we can't make a PVP model work in this IP or the future of it, it is doomed to fail regardless. |

I couldn't agree more that the NPE and laziness in developing Matchmaking is what killed this game for 80% of those who briefly tried it.
(You and I agree on something? That's ******* weird.)

Pain is weakness leaving the body. With that said, I learned by being bathed in the fires of New Eden when I was born in the universe. Started from the bottom, now I'm here. New players need to toughen up. We did it, they can too. |

You would be stuck with matches completely devoid of support classes.. People who actually support their team but don't score high in kills or warpoints but only die 1-2 times, Hack 10 things, kill 6 uplinks.
Along with alot of scouts, combat logi's. The entire way vehicles score are completely different from infantry. just sooooooooooooooooooooooo many holes creating matchmaking like that. |

I just send them in the direction of the corp Elite Intergalactic Mercenaries. It's a great corp for newbs where they can learn the ropes with other newbs and participate in lotteries.
Send the newbs there if you ever see any!

You should remember that probably 75% of new players created are people creating ISK for them self.
As far as retention goes, I have said it many times before and will continue to say it, the academy can not be a static cap. The academy should consist of a rolling average of your last 3-4 matches.

Trying to create a complex system around kicking people out of the battle academy is silly.
We have done this and it just makes the problem worse. It's better to let the interesting people who like to continue to replay battle academy to just do so.. that will have to be players first experience with someone that knows more then they do in the game.
Nerfing battle academy based on a small group of players abusing it is a terrible solution. Better to just make the battle academy Enough work in quests and learning the game that it becomes more of a hassle for a Vet then anything.
But battle Academy should have a static SP cap of 1million skill points before you fully get put into training grounds with players from 1-5m SP. |
