The logistics of battle are not emphasized at all in this game like it was designed to be:
Look at all these pictures of LAV's and Dropships in these matches: http://dust514.com/media/screenshots/lav-assault/
http://dust514.com/media/screenshots/remote-vehicle-repair/
http://dust514.com/media/screenshots/e3-2012-screenshot-03/
Look at these LAVs actually using their turret and dropships being logistical assets!
But in reality.... You spawn in on a game and deploy on ground or MCC spawn then 2 things happes: A) You sprint for nearest objective/city B) You call in a LAV, and proceed to use it as a disposable taxi C) call in a dropship and use it as an elevator onto a building and you spam uplinks then drop down.
LAVs and Dropships are too frequently recalled.
There's absolutely no need for a dropship except as an elevator to a roof. Sure it can help carry your squad across the map but there is little reward for doing so, little need to do so.
It would be easier for people to walk around with uplinks and be less conspicuous then ride in a coffin to a destination. LAVs are frequently used for transport purpose which is good but they are treated as disposable and thus still an inconsequential asset.
The point I am getting at is that the dropship is under used in its intent because the maps do not favor its use over walking. At times when hasty transport is needed a Baloch will do better because at least it has less chance of getting blow out by a railgun. The LAV is used disgustingly as a taxi rather than an attack asset / VIP transport. There's not much point in skilling into Saga or Methana unless you truly want to use it as an attack platform.
Maps are not large enough to support transport vehicles; nor are there enough players per battle (7 players in a single vehicle is nearly half the team. However they are just large enough so that LAVs are favored as one way tickets to a point. No one uses beyond Militia grade LAVs because there is no reason when you're going point A to point B. Why spend more ISK to get to point B when there's no edge in it?
Conclusion: Methana's and Sagas need a transport edge over their militia counterparts Perhaps maps are too infantry favorable, not enough fields to cross like so No reason to use an LAV over a Soma to attack. Maps are small enough to where travel time of an HAV is relatively regardless.
I think it's more of a issue of map size. There should really be some degree of necessity for vehicles to transport quantities of infantry, not just one merc at a time zipping around in an LAV.

You make some good points, but I'm not entirely sure I agree that the one thing Dust does not have enough of is large open plains.

Vehicles need less access not more.

Vehicle access has nothing to do with it There's not enough distance between objectives to make a dropship a viable asset and no reason to use Standard LAVs to transport over Militia LAVs
There is a fundamental problem here and infantry are going to have to suck it up and take one to the gut for it to go away.
