Dear mercs,
What are the best heavy suits currently in the game? I'm thinking of giving in to the temptation and spending some SP to officially become a fat boy.
Considerations would have to include the commando role as well. I will only skill one racial heavy branch of the skill tree. Not spending more SP than that. I have a bias toward gallente and minmatar, and I'm a CR lover.
So what's the best fatty? All opinions appreciated.

That depends.
The Gallente and Amarr sentinels are excellent at bricking. I'd lean more towards the Gallente sentinel for that.
The Caldari sentinel is more self-sufficient because it can actually heal itself properly.
The Minmatar sentinel... is pretty fun. As the fastest heavy, if you put kincats on it you can actually move at quite a rate. I think it's possible to run down assaults if you kincat it.
You have long since made your choice. What you make now is a mistake.

Amarr Commando is the best fat suit. It's main strength comes from out ranging all rifles with the laser rifle which becomes absolutely deadly with the racial bonus, and tear people to shreds up close with the assault scrambler, and can fit a high amount of EHP while still being able to move around.
Amarr are the good guys
Their way of the Commando seems right and noble

Gallente is probably the best then Ammar. Use Caldari for a dedicated Forge fit. Use the Minmatar sentinel....................for fun |

Allow me to help narrow the choices down for you:
How "social" are you?
If you find yourself joining squads often, then chances are a Logistics unit will be following you often as well. This means that you don't have to worry about being as self-sufficient as possible, as you'll most likely have support. As such, you'd be more effective with an Amarr or Gallente Sentinel
If you find yourself to be more of a "solo" player, then chances are a Logistics unit will not be supporting you. As such, you need to be as self sufficient as possible (or you won't perform well). In this case, you'd be more effective with a Minmatar or Caldari Sentinel.
What is your playstyle?
- If your a "Stand-and-Deliver" type of player, the Amarr Sentinel will suit you best.
- If your a "Defensive, but Pushy" type of player, the Gallente Sentinel will suit you best.
- If your a "Back-In-Action ASAP" type of player, the Caldari Sentinel will suit you best.
- If your a "Speedy" and/or "Flanking" type of player, the Matari Sentinel will suit you best.
What is your HP & Speed Preferences?
if you prefer HP, the favorable sentinel choices are in this order:
- Gallente Sentinel
- Amarr Sentinel
- Caldari Sentinel
- Matari Sentinel
If you prefer Speed, the favorable Sentinel choices are in this order:
- Matari Sentinel
- Caldari Sentinel | Gallente Sentinel
- Amarr Sentinel
How "good" are you?
It should be noted, that the Shielded Sentinels are more difficult to use than the Armored Sentinels. This is due to the fact that you still move -relatively- slow while having a large hit-box, and the lack of eHP (in comparison) means that you have to be a quick thinker with good reflexes to survive
((That's not to say however, that the Armored Sentinels are for inexperience players however. It's just me stating that there is a higher difficulty curve with the Shielded Sentinels)).

Caldari - with a FG, is the best for AV
Minmatar - best Heavy to use with a Rifle
Gallente - the HP tank
Amarr - a good mix of Armor and added DPS. A well-balanced, versatile fitting. (And the only one I don't currently have.)
Your choice.

Thanks for the detailed response Atiim.
I think my initial instincts were close, I'm going gallente or minmatar. I like to brick and push at the frontline so gallente maybe. But, but I also like speed and flanking, so minmatar looks good. I try to squad up as much as possible, so tanking might not be that essential, if a logi is around. The minmatar will also give me some high slots for damage mods.
The minmatar commando bonus will also complement my vast selection of proficiency 3 combat rifles. :)
Gallente sentinel and minmatar commando seems to match my playstyle best

I'm an amarr sent. Reason I went amarr was because with racial bonus maxed, the suit nullifies full proficiency on hmg (projectile). Gallente sent only blocks 10%. Also amarr can stack 2 complex damage mods where gal only has one.
So in my eyes the amarr is superior to the gallente until a logi is involved and then it just depends on ehp, which class is repping and head shots put in with hmg.
I usually run reps, kin kats and enegizers when solo (which is more often then not) and wreck most heavies. That build has less ehp then base ;)

If your going commando, amarr commando is the best place to start, that or gallente commando

I play 2 different heavies a cal and a gal.
When i know i am going to be in the middle of a lot of firefights often and especially if i have logi support i play gal. They have better armor and there is no rep tool for shields so its better for me and the logi supporting me.
When i am playing larger mostly outdoor maps i play cal for the speed and i pick my fights more especially if i am running in a squad without a logi. |

Super mobile heavy take can move from engagement to engagement? Caldari!
Wanna use a MLT frame only? Try Minmatar!
Want to do everything better then all the heavies listed above AND beat every heavy in a 1v1? That would be Amarr.
Amarr is hands down the best heavy, no ifs ands or buts. They also have the best Assault and Logi(don't to mention a amazing rifle that they will always say is UP for some reason)

Well, just to let you know/remind you, that you can not equip heavy machine guns in commando but 2 light weapons the other way around for sentinel |
