I'm interested in the long-term vision for Legion and I've been going through this forum but I haven't been able to nail down a general idea of idea of what a "typical" play session of Legion will be like. I just hope the idea of rounds will be absent from Legion, and have the game fully embrace a(n) open world/sandbox nature. I've seen the harvesters and the menus and vizor fog videos, but I'm still missing what's going to really drive gameplay, and I really hope it's the allure of emergent experiences with other players in New Eden and not the endless cycles of death match and control rounds.
This brings me to the idea of careers. Over in EvE space, the first things players are told is:
The idea of a job in EvE is very much defined by the ship you fly and how you fit said ship. I think this idea is fantastic and would transfer with ease to Legion and in a way much more fundamental than the way Dust514 did. Allowing players to treat their drop suits as a tool to further their career, rather than the combat class you want to play, expands the role of drop suits beyond their current focus and into new directions and new gameplay opportunities.
The current set of drop suits are very much focused on styles of gunplay, sniper/heavy/generic solider. I think these are important and will end up evolving into more specialized roles that will be required for riskier opportunities. But beyond that I think some new drops suits could bring new gameplay opportunities and I think defining these suits around possible career paths is the way to go. Legion players will able to train into a career that they want. Career oriented decisions will also help define the kinds of activities and tools that are needed to make the career a meaningful and fun experience. An example of this is exploration, instead of just being an activity that happens as an aside to fulfilling contracts, exploration could be a career path that allows people to train into specialized gear and tools that will allow them to track down sites that contain valuable materials and technology. Those materials and technology would then be fed into the marketplace which would then fuel even riskier exploration opportunities.
I hope I'm on the right track for what to expect out of EvE Legion.
