I took snipers to 5 with proficiency 4 about 2 months ago. And during this time, I found the redline to be the best place to set up shop. No, not because the enemy team can't get me. I run a calmanndo with a rail rifle as a backup so I have no problem engaging in a gunfight, and even then my suit costs 30k, so I have no problem getting caught with my pants down and blasted. I'll explain my reasoning for favoring the redline, and other more dedicated snipers can shine in if they so choose.
Snipers need 2 main things in order to perform their job. One is adequate field of view. The other is adequate distance.
An adequate field of view means that I can cover a decent amount of the battle to snipe people from. This area needs to be large enough that I can reliably acquire a target, track it, and down it. This means there shouldn't be a whole lot of buildings or terrain blocking a shot.
Adequate distance is twofold. I need enough distance that I can hit moving targets (the closer they get, the harder it is to keep them in the scope) and enough distance that they can't retaliate. This adequate range is about 200-500 meters of distance, which means a target is easy to pick up and keep in my sights, since the closer they are, the quicker they can disappear from my field of view.
Now, take a guess where I get both of these things needed to properly snipe? You guessed it, the redline. The redline has many places where I can get an unobstructed view of the battle, and also give me enough distance that I can keep people in my sights and keep them at range.
So yes, when I snipe you will sometimes fiind me somewhere in the redline, if it is easier for me to get kills from there. But personally, I have no problem picking up and moving where people can get to me if it offers more of the above mentioned sniper spot necessities.

I love how you reserved two posts on a thread about a useless scrub tactic you endorse. Wasting space in matches and on the forums. Bravo sir. Bravo.

do ya REALLY need two reserved posts?
You should snipe on top of the MCC with a Thale's. Talk about adequate field of view and distance. You can't even get rail tank counter sniped. |

You just explained one of the issues that has been a debate about snipers on the forums.
Their is a difference in a marksman sniper, a long range tactical sniper and a scout sniper.
Marksman sniping is not adequete for the sniper rifle in this game because the conditions that exist with flow of combat are not the conditions a marksman would operate in. The scrambler, rail and tac AR, though not one shot weapons are better suited for the fast pace, merry go round nature of this game.
The scout sniper is what today's sniper is and is more desired by snipophobes in this game since anybody can use a sniper rifle without any sp and downing one opponent is not seen as helping to win games. There are no other special abilities for the scout sniper to be of benefit as a sniper AND a scout so that role tends to be useless and people end up sniping just for kills.
The thired role is the role you are referring to and the main role myself and most snipers in game like which is the long range tactical sniper. This is the old school form of sniping made famous by Carlos Hathcock, Simo Hayha and infamously by Charles Whitman.
This is the sniper who's sole mission is to take out targets that can not easily return fire nor locate your whereabouts. This however, is not a a very useful role under the circumstances. The areas in the redline and up high in far locations on the sides of the maps are the only places to truly perform this task.
It is not that players hate snipers in the redline due to the distance so much as for the protection. If the maps were bigger, more areas were exposed for sniping, the maps weren't simple bowl shapes, their was more skills associated with successfully sniping and most importantly it could contribute more to the game then most people, save snipophobes wouldn't mind.
The way the game modes are designed doesn't allow for snipers to contribute as well using long range sniping. I'd love to see Legion offer better enivornments, skills and role as well as game modes that do not encourage vanilla assault cap and run tactics to win.
That being said I love long range sniping because it is fun for me, I don't play for other's fun, I like simple target practice, it goes good with beer, the game is silly as is andGǪ it pisses off all the right people.

With my op thales and charge builds, think i hit 33% extra damage with passive and mods. 3 shot those sentinel suits. The unstoppable heavy whos name keeps going up on the kills... I kill them. I have minium 1 OB a match dropped on me.
I only snipe when I'm bored. So, don't worry I'm not a go hard sniper |

Full Spec'd Sniper Tree 1+ year Dust 514 Sniper
I usually find a spot along the Enemy side redline and snipe from there. That said, on certain maps I will shoot from my redline just because it's the best spot on those maps.
Sniping is about distance shooting, that's it.
I'm all for removing the redline or something. So that I can go get others and I welcome them to come and get me.
or make 1 standard redline area, the battle zones are bigger on Skirmish than on Dom maps...make them all the same. Bigger that is, Texas style....
I am not from Texas.

I've had Sniper Rifles at L2 for ages, but not used them for the same amount of time. The other day I decided to try running a MinCom with Tactical SR/Combat Rifle and run in the burnzone.
I did well.
Not incredibly! But I didn't perform badly: my K/DR was high; my WP were in the mid to high thousand area; and my suits cost around 35k a pop (using mostly advanced stuff.) I killed numerous snipers who spent most of their time in the redline but I killed my share of enemies with the SR/TSR too.
To this snipers who need range..why? I realise my perspective is somewhat skewed from running a Commando suit, but that's one of the perks of the Commando suit, flexibility. You can run, on the ground, with your squad mates and still perform sniping duties: picking off enemy snipers, locking down an enemy advance or thinning the herd. Quite simply, the redline is a crutch that snipers do not need. You want to use range, that's fine, but the redline needs fixing (pushing back.) |

I like War Thunder's style of spawning. In arcade mode, the spawns are super spread out, with fighters and some attackers in front, bombers and other attackers in back. In realistic mode, you're on an airfield protected by a ton of flak cannons.
So, I think the best spawn system for Dust would be having the "redline" spawns super random, with the player being able to decide if they want to spawn up front or in back, with the "redline" being protected by a ton of indestructible, un-hackable turrets. Or simply super-turrets that don't get blown up easily.
