This is why CCP will not be able to make a AAA game, ever:

It is too bad but I really think things are changing for the better. Eve is an outstanding game that started really small. And sometimes games just don't work.
Pulling the W0D plug for now was the best thing CCP could do. New Eden really is a cool place made from scratch that started on a spread sheet. I mean this with no malice but I prefer New Eden despite those PvP concepts were freaking cool. I just want more Eve Universe.

I never expected an 'AAA' game from CCP.
I never wanted to play just another AAA shooter when I signed up for Dust 514's closed beta. I was hoping CCP would be able to provide something unique in the shooter world. AAA games are safe, boring, mindless entertainment. THe best they can do is the same old same old, but do it really well. Take Destiny, there is nothing about that game that is innovative or interesting in any way. But I will still play it. Just like I went to the theatre to see Avatar. Even though Avatar was a really corny mishmash of all of the most generic tropes to be found in the sci fi genre.
I don't expect Peter Dinklage to tell me that a wizard came from the moon in legion, either. And you really can't argue that Destiny isn't playing it safe. They are going with what they know will succeed. Even if they might be able to do that better than most other developers out there. Destiny is an FPS sci fi version of Final Fantasy XIV. Plain and simple.
I play games from independent developers in the hope that they will do something other than dish out more of the same. But not only is CCP getting left in the dust by developers like Bungie that have the backing of the biggest FPS publisher ever and a 500 million dollar budget to make what Dust 514 pretended to be, an FPS MMO, but they are getting their asses handed to them by independents as well.
There are a whole slew of really interesting games on the horizon. Some made by tiny dogs. Even if No Man's Sky proves to be nothing more than an interesting experiment and tech demo, a four man studio will have pulled off what is usually just accepted as totally impossible here on the forums. Created thousands of unique, explorable planets.
For as long as I have been coming here it is always been common knowledge that "There are OMG like 5000 planets in New Eden you couldn't possibly make unique and persistent maps for all of them." Four people may have figured out a way to do just that.
Or Dreadnought. Even though Yager pretty much one of those AAA studios. Dreadnought looks a lot like what you might expect from CCP as a game about the sort of battles happen on the planets of New Eden.
I am still hoping that CCP will focus on making legion a good game, instead of one that is familiar to people and attmpts to ape what other games have already done successfully. |
