Just now I was flying through space in my loot hauler avoiding the Space Police. Why you ask? i had about 35 million in cargo, most of it being illegal. I was moving the stuff to a more accessible location. It was the usual business: stacks upon stacks of drugs, enough alcohol to take us to Mars and back, but I had a particular part of my cargo that peaked my tired brain's interest: I had people and animals aboard my ship.
I started thinking, "You know, all of these people are ******* useless to me. They just sit there and collect dust. They mean nothing to me. I'm surprised they are worth so much, and for no apparent reason at that......... oh, thread idea."
Now, as I noted above, I already had the drugs and booze idea. That was pretty easy to make an idea for. But This is a little harder (much harder since I'm running on fumes). so I'm just going to say some random idaes for how they should become useful, and elaborate on it at a later date:
people can do a verity of tasks (seeing as though there is many types of people). slaves could do tasks for us while we cover them, allowing us to do said tasks longer and with more efficiency (ex. letting them do the mining while you cover them, so instead of mining for a bit, killing off the rats that comes at you, then continuing to mine.), or allowing for bigger operations (replacing mercs that can't show up etc. with slaves or combat people).
Animals although can't do complex tasks, they could be good for just having for just being in your MQ or for exploring around with (of course, there should be places that they aren't allowed. You don't take a dog into a bar).

Hell yeah!
Get some mercs that are cheaper than drones or clones, while you're at it. Of course, these guys are probably cowards and would run away when things get hot.
