Is it absolutely terrible?
Is anyone using it successfully and should I dump sp into it?

Everyone assumed it was going to replace the AR, but it never did because people tried it out, got annoyed by the kick, and went back to their usual weapons.
People are just so used to their light weapons having no kick or dispersion when they ADS, that when a weapon comes out with a ton of kick while ADS they can't use it.
I personally don't use it because it's a caldari weapon, and I feel that the standard SMG works better, even if it does have a shorter range.

Its decent but it has a lot of recoil making you have to burst fire at medium ranges...
Otherwise it has one real drawback that makes the regular smg better right now- its low rof and recoil means that with the hit detection being fuckin trash, its hard to get full dps with it. You'll have trouble at point blank range because of the hit detection and medium to long range the recoil hurts.
Otherwise its actual dps and hipfire are great and will melt people if you don't get blue shields over and over. Definitely will be amazing if they fix hit detection.-á

I say check out the standard variant. Like IWS said, she can drop the pain on some mercs. I just stick with the SMG because its what I'm used to.
I kill with the Magsec easier on the hip. But then again, I have a 8 year old PS3 controller. It's pretty wonky, so shoulder firing with the controller that tends to move in its own direction coupled with the kickback, causes me some trouble on some occasions when I aim down sights.
It's worth a shot IMO

Whether it is useful depends on your main weapon.
I use it as a sidearm to the assault forgegun. Everything outside of 40 meters gets a forgegun shell to the torso, at less range I opt for the MagSec. If I used the SMG I would die a lot to people in MLT suits at medium range where I can't aim well with the AFG and the SMG is outranged. With the MagSec I just have to avoid getting into CQC-fights. |

The regular SMG has the advantage in close range combat, the Magsec hurts more at longer ranges.
The Magsec pairs nicely with a Shotgun, because you can use the shottie at point-blank and the Magsec at longer ranges where the regular SMG won't reach your target. SMGs are a good Sniper backup weapon because if the enemy is close enough to negate your Rifle's effectiveness, the SMG will let you cover your bases. Both weapons are fine to back up a rifle, because when you're filling a frontline role it's more about your skill and preferred range than the sidearm's performance.
Pick the one that best complements your playstyle with a general-purpose primary, OR the one that best contrasts with your primary weapon if it's specialised.
EDIT: I forgot to address pistols... Scrambler = good for headshots, Flaylock = extra ammo for your contact grenades, Ion = I haven't used it yet, ask someone else. I primarily stick to the two SMG options, so I can't really help as much with comparing pistols. Oh yeah, and Nova Knives are pretty self-explanatory. |

I don't use it because it's a filthy Caldari weapon, but it's an excellent weapon.
Learn to control the kick and it will treat you very nicely.
However my playstyle demands a CQC sidearm, and the Assault SMG delivers.

It's basically if you want a sidearm for situations when your light weapon won't be good enough, and you want it to be a small Rail Rifle with slightly less DPS, then go for it.
Think about it. It's the best long range sidearm option (except maybe Bolt Pistol, IDK I don't use them) for shotgunners, assault rifle and even laser users.
I tried it and liked it. It's a dependable sidearm, but like any sidearm it is not for slaying just for situational uses.

Yeah, gotta say, the magsec totally didn't live up to the hype. I guess CCP actually *gasp* might have learned a lesson from the RR.
I hate the damn thing. Unreliable, and for the things I use sidearms for, like pesky scouts who are on top you in 3 seconds, it's just terribad. Why would I pair it with my LR? If they're that far away, I'm going to use the damn LR. My sidearm is for people who get inside 40m.

I have it maxed out, but use only STD Basic MagSec
Does wonders for me, one of my best sidearms. Note, it is ONLY a sidearm it isn't meant to be your main weapon, just when its best to use rail tech or if you don't have any ammo left in main gun. Its my little railgun, only in sidearm format.
Not to mention, it has a larger clip than the railgun. Which is pretty jacked up to me, who thought up this crap?

I have it maxed out and no unless you're an elite player I wouldn't recommend it.. I'm the only person that I know who is actually good with it and even then I still don't like it.

I have it at Lv5, and have no regrets about skilling into it. It's the perfect sidearm to use with a shotgun. Decent range, good dps, and the charge isn't much of an issue if it's just a backup for mid range fights, which I usually avoid as it is. I don't use the proto magsec much, but that's just because I usually can't fit it.
It isn't really that hard to manage the kick on it. Is it really so difficult to move your sight back where it was? (the answer is no, unless you are really bad)
I usually ADS with it, I find that there's way too much spread when I hipfire it. Why bother wasting a bunch of ammo hipfiring when you can kill them faster with ADS and a bit more precise aiming? |
