First, your core skills must be lvl 5.
Next you need a lvl 5 logi (caldari would be best)
5 complex damage mods
4 complex armour plates
10 nano hives (if you just plain suck) I use 2 ammo, 2 repair
LOCATION IS EVERYTHING! TIMING IS EVERYTHING!
Let them walk into the shot! DON'T CHASE em. Once they know its a sniper, they will run. If you miss, move on.
When I snipe, the MCC roof is the place to be. Plenty of room up there for all those hives. Bring some friends along and make it a party....
I imagine all the ones crying are lvl 1 snipers
If you want MORE armour, try sniping with a Cko heavy. That's fun....
I think im gonna run sniper for a while. Forgot how much fun it was to one shot somebody..

Logi, eh..?
With the stacking penalties that apply to the -insane- amount of fitting costs for the 5% damage increase, you're better off going Caldari Commando and getting the 10% damage increase that -isn't- affected by stacking penalties. Just as well, you sacrifice grenades for the ability to fit two light weapons (I've seen people use Sniper Rifle + AV among other interesting fits) as well as having a -huge- amount of HP to survive the counter sniper -AND- an equipment slot for ammunition.
Not that I'm giving anyone ideas or nothing.

Yeah, but what do the numbers look like if running 4 complex damage mods? The stacking penalty gets stronger, where if after the first 2 complex, you then went to an advanced then basic.
Complex damage mod is only 5% now. What is the decrease in value of the second damage mod, the 3rd, and 4th.
Can you actually get more benefit out of stacking a different way?

It does not require a Thales, nor stacked damage modifiers, nor the redline, nor dropships to be a successful sniper. Your build is excessively expensive and obnoxious. You do not understand how damage mod stacking works. 5 x 5% mods is actually 5, 4.3, 2.8, 1.4, and finally 0.5 for a grand total of 14% bonus damage, or a Caldari Commando with ONE enhanced damage modifier.
The ideal Sniper is a Caldari Commando. You will have the perfect set of tools:
2.14 (10% even) free Complex Light Damage Modifiers (when trained to 5)
Faster Reload (this is the real prize imho)
The ability to carry a (preferably Rail) Rifle to fight off spotters.
A pair of nanohives. You shouldn't be burning through 2 nanohives all that fast.
3 high slots at proto for a total of 22.1% bonus damage stacked (not including Proficiency!)
If you feel brave, the Caldari Assault's reload/fitting bonuses are better than nothing. 4 high slots at proto is more than enough if you really feel the need to crank damage.
Don't aim to get headshots. Get headshots. Seriously just get them. Of course it takes practice.
If you can't get a headshot, tag him so your teammates (I hope you have squadmates) can kill the target.
Don't waste your ammo on Sentinel Gk.0s (especially if they are being repped or standing on hives) or vehicles. Don't waste your ammo period.
Move, move, move. Unless you like dying to scouts/forge guns/tanks.
Or put down rep hives so I can see you way out there

OH DAMN SON
Just did the math, and a Commando Ck.0 with 3 complex damage modifiers and a Thales does
487 Damage!!!! BEFORE HEADSHOT DAMAGE!!!
Honestly your Logi will do 458, which isn't that much less, but at the cost of 3 extra low slot modules, 2 extra high slot modules, and no backup weapon. And those 3 other sets of hives you want to put on so bad.

The problem with Commando snipers is they are so easy to spot and they are slow, not at all stealthy like a scout sniper would be. That's fine. That's a trade-off for the added protection of a 2nd light weapon and added damage.
THE PROBLEM IS A LOT OF SNIPERS SIT WAY BACK IN THE REDLINE - TOTALLY UNTOUCHABLE! (As do some tanks)
That bit is wrong, everyone who causes damage on the battlefield should also be able to be damaged. And not only by counter sniping or warbarge strikes.
CCP adjust the redline already. |

I agree that the only logical option for snipers trying to take down prototype suits is to be sniping in a Commando suit.
It feels forced CCP.
You don't need to revenge kill every single sniper. It would seem fair if you could, but it's their duty to be out of the way far removed to get excellent vantage points. You won't be getting those generally if you're 50m up on an easily accessible rooftop ladder included.
How to counter a sniper..
1. Switch to a heavy suit.(passive) 2. Switch to a suit with a cloak. (passive) 3. Play indoors. (passive) 4. Never stop moving. (passive) 5. Avoid their line of sight. (passive) 6. ADS you can kill infantry in the redline in 20 seconds. (active) ^ with splash damage missiles you hardly have to aim ^ 7. Rail Tanks can counter snipe effectively. (active) 8 Forge Guns can counter snipe effectively. (active 9. You could switch to counter sniping like a boss. (active) 10. Warbarge Strike that Thale's user in a pub match. (active) 11. Get inside of a vehicle. (passive)
You don't need my help to figure it out. Revenge kills on snipers require more effort. It's that simple and there's nothing wrong with it. It takes more effort to kill a person in a vehicle, a cloaked scout, a heavy suit, a sniper on a hill. The end. |

To be completely honest - days of "OP sniper" have ended long time ago, there isn't such thing currently in game.. Situation may change when we all get a new(minmatar) sniper rifle and CCP will deal with armor plates. Thats the major steps that need to be done in first place, then whole sniping mechanic need to change, so that snipers can be more mobile, and skill(real skill) depended.
edit: not to mention about series of bugs that we have to deal with everyday - invisible structures at distance, no-dmg shots, invisible shields that prevent killing LAV-driver and gunner.

My equipment always slid off the roof of the MCC.
I've given up my sniper fits for a scrambler rifle--haven't fired an SR in a few weeks.
Also, I'd argue that the Amarr logi suit is hands down the best sniper suit since you also get a sidearm slot. With the damage mod nerf in 1.8, the extra two complex mods (ie, 3 in the Amarr vs 5 in the Cal) only grants an extra 2.2% damage bonus, and when we're talking about alpha damage in the 400 - 750 / shot range, the 2.2% difference is rarely ever going to be the deciding factor in whether your target dies or not. But you can still stack armor and pack NHs like a mofo. |
