First off, this is going off of the assumption that CCP will do the sensible thing, and not try to custom-design every planet in the galaxy, and instead use some form of Dust's current map generator.
Currently, the socket system allows semi-randomized outposts, buildings, and the like to appear in set locations.
This is all well and good.
But what if terrain was added to this as well?
For example, this area over here could either be a hill, or continued flat land. Meanwhile this area over here could be a depression, or possibly some rocky outcrops like in the center of Manus Peak.
If you want to get really ambitious, you could do something like "If there's a hill right here, and another hill next to it, they could potentially form together to make an even bigger hill!" but I'm not a dev, so I don't know what will be doable.
As a final end idea, existing structures could also potentially be generated with some damage to them. Imagine that where you would have a nice bridge on one map, the same bridge could appear collapsed in another map.
The possibilities are endless.

It was stated by a former CCP employee that using the socket system for terrain is entirely doable.

CCP Rat already stated that new maps and sockets are out of the question... short term. I would love new maps, new sockets, everything. Simple fact is that we won't be seeing it any time soon, if at all. |
