For you PC nerds, I know, I know CCP are partners with Nvidia and stuff like that but here me out.
What is mantle? An API thing like DX11 or OpenGL
What does it do? "Mantle reduces the CPUGÇÖs workload by giving developers a way to talk to the GPU directly with much less translation. With less work for the CPU to do, programmers can squeeze much more performance from a system, delivering the greatest benefits in gaming systems where the CPU can be the bottleneck."
What it means for games? "Now that Mantle has freed up some extra CPU capacity, we expect Mantle will lead to better games, and more of them, since Mantle makes game development easier. ThatGÇÖs not all Mantle will do for gamers. By shifting work to the GPU, a mid-range or older CPU isnGÇÖt the same handicap it was before. With Mantle, the GPU becomes the critical part of the system, and GPU upgrades will have a bigger impact than before."
So basically it lets AMD GPU users to get a better FPS ingame.
Summary http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBsYsyUDVDE
so Mantle can boost your performance by up to 45%
AND it will probably work with Nvidia Cards in the future (around when Legion comes out)

Well, from my understanding, Mantle is a proprietary technology from AMD, at least nowadays. I hear they plan on making it "available", but really, being a direct access to specific hardware instructions, it dosent seems count much as a different makers will have different ways to access the hardware. So, in practical terms, everyone woudl have to develop their "mantle".
DX11 will have upon release similar direct access to functions as Mantle does, on the OS level, continuing being the abstraction layer it is, a standard to be folowed by devs, that "simply works".
So that means that any videocard will be able to use DX11, which is a standard API, so I see there a clear advantage for developers.
While its not impossible that CCP release code optmized for Mantle (or any game for that matter), I doubt it will happen soon regarding Legion, as it would warrant different code for the same thing DX11 is already doing, making development more expensive and on a longer time frame.
I really dont see much sense in AMD pulling this proprietary code stunt. Its almost as we went back to the 3D genesys where there were many cards, incompatible crap and was a mess.
It makes sense in the console environment, where it will have a long life and is a closed environment with only one vendor and 1 type fo hardware. Within Windows though? It works, sure, but nonetheless is one more thing to be done and that could go wrong in the hardware environment. |
