Many people overlook this "Installations" option while calling forth the RDV or using a warbarge strike. I mean, seriously, what does this option do?

It drops an RDV on your head.
Yes first time ever I had an RDV actually kill me, infantry, by landing on me as it staggered past me to drop a red tank, yay. Not the vehicle but the actual RDV crushed me.

Installations were supposed to be for small turrets back in the day or it was something promised for the future. It does nothing.

i believe you can, (can you?) spec into turrets outside of vehicle turret operation
and then call in your own turret?
never seen it happen though, probably a placeholder like the pilot suits. at least they have
the decency to flat out show you there are dozens of things missing from the militia store.

It would be lovely if a hotfix could remove inoperable things... Like this and pilot suits in the store.

One of the many broken promises:
We were supposed to be able to buy installations (CRU's, turrets, etc) and call them in mid battle (similar to orbitals). That would then evolve to commander mode where a commander would pilot the MCC while giving orders/calling in support.
That promise was 2 years ago and this option has existed for those 2 years: we haven't progressed yet and won't.
