Recent discussion has heavily been focused on the proposed ideas for the Skill System in EVE: Legion.
Development feels that the current system is too complicated for the target audience, and has suggested a simplified system to make things easier for new players to understand. I however feel that simplifying the system excessively betrays the freedom of gameplay that is New Eden, and that the primary issue lies in the presentation of the system and not the system itself. The above PDF presents and interface designed to make Skilling easy for new players, while maintaining the depth of the skill system for veteran players.
When presented in this manner, new players will be able to quickly identify what role they want to play and in what order they should train skills in order to fulfill that role. The system guides them gradually into that role, but does not restrict their access to cross training skills if they so choose to. Players will be able to dynamically switch between roles as well as Basic and Advanced mode in order to gain a broader understanding of their progress without being overwhelming by the size and complexity of the system.
And as always not everyone may agree with each other but these sort of documents are created to foster healthy and productive discussion, no fighting and bickering. I ask that you keep the conversation clean and productive.
Like my ideas?

This is a solid proof of concept that the progression system for Legion doesn't have to throw the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to providing accessibility to new players.
I am a strong supporter of the NPE and enhancements too it, however retention of new players is only half the project as once a new player is retained they become a vet who will - quite reasonably - care about long term play and end game content. In this light we cannot afford to oversimplify the progression in Legion as that directly reduces end game character development (i.e. player choice) and thus the lifespan of the game.
Legion needs a system in place which gives a robust NPE without resorting to a watered down version of the New Eden experience. We're all in the same sandbox, CCP, you know it or you'd not have marketed too it so heavily, we can ill afford to stratify the choices within that sandbox by throttling player choices within certain New Eden products. In short, we should all play in New Eden, not just have many segmented products within "New EdenTM". It's the sandbox that matters, not the IP.
Thanks for putting in the work on this Pokey

Might as well, at least that one is anchored and centralized. I think a lot of the discussion going on there (at least during the first half) would benefit.

I think you are getting at the meat of the situation as far as understanding the progression and roles component. The certificate concept you've lfited from EVE is pretty key and helps give players and idea of how skills (expressed via passive & active buffs, and module effects) connect and reinforce.
I have noticed that CCP Z has stated a few areas that the overall pace of progress will slow in a noticeable fashion. Makes me curious how that will effect the overall progression model and how it is received. My base assumption is that their will be both passive and active accrual of SP similar to Dust - although there are clearly some different options that could be taken in terms of how SP is generated to fuel the progression options.

It is a good idea, and I can see a lot of other player's feedback in the foundations of your proposal. I like it. But frankly I would have given you a +1 just for the amount of effort you put into this and the quality of the presentation.
