One of the key things that could keep players playing Legion, is to give players a sense of ownership, to allow them to say "this is mine", which in turn gives them something to fight to protect (and also creates salty tears when those things get blown up).
So the question is, how to give players a sense of ownership at the various levels through which they may engage with Legion. At the individual level this could simply be the ability to customize and invest in your mercs physical appearance, the vehicles and weapons they use, and the merc quarters in which they reside between battles.
At the corporation level this could start with being able to plant a flag on a district and claim it as their own, a step further would be allowing them to develop and select the buildings within it. Being able to design and display your corp badge. Being able to manufacture your own weapons of war
At the alliance level this could mean working together to take all the districts on a planet, which then unlocks a capital sized district for development and customization (and has an orbital cannon).

It is important to have visibility, to show new players that their time and effort will be rewarded with "this." Right now we show-off proto gear, and in addition to the sleek colors, it offers gameplay advantages. New players see it and decide they need to buy some SP boosters or simply quit (too hard).
The hard job will be finding something that will be desired, but not break the game. I think you could make money from cosmetics, but a lot more from PLEX...because only a small fraction of players are interested in vanities, whilst the majority want a better experience for themselves (advantages in SP or gear). Now where can I buy my Epic Mount? (Speeder Bike)

I think cosmetics (and microtransactions) can certainly form a part of it. But I really want Legion players to be able to say "this is mine", whether it be their personal quarters, their corporations MCC, or their alliances capital. |
