Electronics and Engineering are always good for helping to fit out your suit. Unless you are running a Sentinel, because they have more CPU/PG than they need.

What do you plan to do with the character? Scout, assualt, heavy? This helps but you can't go wrong with upgrading core skills first as these always apply. |

Somewhat playstyle/role dependent but generally speaking you can't go wrong putting your SP into Dropsuit Upgrades. The skills there apply to all suits, and most of them apply to all roles as well (to varying degrees).
A very broad way to look it is this, if you have maxed the Upgrades portion of the skill tree your STD suit will function like a Proto suit (racial skill buffs not withstanding of course). You c an spend over 20 mill in the Upgrades tree so when in doubt you can invest there.
Hope that is helpful,
Cheers, Cross

I thought that at first. But you're wrong because even with PG maxed out I have to settle for a Viziam ScP instead of Carthum when I use Lai Dai AV nades.

But remember this when it comes to Dropsuit Upgrades.
If you're a Scout, focus on Biotics. If you're a Logi, focus on equipment before you pick a Logi suit because each one is better with a specific one (Minmatar for repair tool, etc.) And if you're a Sentinel, focus on armor, shields or both.
Commandos and Assaults are a little different, and I wouldn't bother with Dropsuit Upgrades until you've picked the right weapon to match the suit, but it's fine if you've done Engineering and Electronics because like others have said, that is good for everything.
However if you want to use a vehicle do NOT spend points in dropsuit command, upgrades, or even weapons. Just focus on vehicle command, upgrades, and turrets.
