currently legion is set in the lobby shooter direction, you pick a fight within your pay grade fight it and their is no consequences to the battles.
I agree that these should be in legion, they are a nice way to earn money and will be a great way to just get in some meaningless fun.
what legion needs to make it stand out though is a true sandbox experience and I will outline what I have in mind below.
Over View -
Players will fight in non stop battles that will take place until their is a designated winner, players will buy MCC's, supply them with clones, and move from battle to battle across the multiple districts. You will not know how many clones your opponents have, you will not win by destroying the enemy mcc's nor will you win by cloning out your oppnent.
you will win by taking and securing a shield device that will prevent attacks on that district for a short time (15-20 minutes), or some other thing to this effect, that will secure the area and allow the players to move on for a short time though they may need to return to defend it later.
this is not about winning battles it's about winning wars, and if a side secures the whole planet then that faction will win,
Where will these battles take place -
These battles would take place on corporation or racially owned planets that are currently under dispute from other factions.
How will you be rewarded for participating if theirs no concrete end to a battle
Their will be no WP's and no end game screen for these battles, when you get a kill you will be directly rewarded with sp, and you can salvage gear from the bodies if you bring a salvage tool, if you secure a district or defend it the side you are fighting for will directly fund you with a large sum of isk.
if a planet is completely secured you will gain faction loyalty from the side you faught for to get unique bpos and gear, plus isk and other things based on your participation.
Will their be friendly fire
Yes and it's expected that you will get back stabbers and betrayers to some degree, if you get too many friendly kill the side you are betraying will simply remove you from a mercenary they will hire, and you will be unable to participate in battles for them similar to how we do it in FW now, but you will be able to participate for any other faction you wish.
once you've gotten a friendly kill the player you killed is free to mark you as hostile, at which point any player on the team will be free to kill you without issue.
How will mcc's work
- These will be controlled by an eve or dust player.
- The MCC commander will be in control of strike fired by the MCC, they will have modules and light weapon they can fire at opposing MCC's or ground targets if they are in range, they will be capable of carrying and dropping turrets and supply depo's assuming you fit them with them before hand.
- various MCC's will have different strength's, some may be faster, be capable of carrying more clones, have stronger shields or armor, carry more deployables, or a faster drop rate, etc.
- outside of battles, MCC's will naturally generate clones slowly, but will not repair their armor naturally, you will need to move them across the map to a repair station to do that, and make use of other faculties.
- legion players waiting to be deployed will be inside of a planning room, they will be able to see the planet map, talk with their MCC commander and discuss where to attack/defend next.
what will the map look like
- rather then a wheel like we have now the planet will be divided into multiple districts layed out over the entire surface of the planet resulting in 128 or so districts per planet.
- players will only be able to attack districts adjacent to a district they already control
- MCC commanders will move from district to district over the surface of the planet and if they enter an area currently being occupied by an enemy they will enter that battle if the mcc commander leaves the battle area they will move into the next area on the map
- each tile of the map will show the state of that battle, how many people are participating, the strength of your forces and the strength of the enemy forces which will be represented in color( i.e a red district will liekly be lost because the enemy force is far greater then your side ).
What type of districts will the players fight over
- Warp Designation Points: These areas are essential without these no new mcc's can be brought in.
- Clone generation faculties: These are where players can replenish their clones and continue fighting on the planet, the more of these you have the more will be available to buy every interval for the MCC commanders.
- Star Cannons - eve ships will be shot at from these, the more you have the harder it will be for enemy eve ships to be around the planet.
- MCC repair stations: having control of these will allow MCC players to repair between battles, this will be instantaneous but you will need to be able to get to the repair station.
- empty districts: these districts are empty, but they will have the shield generators and are capable of being controlled, they will server little tactical value but the enemy will be unable to move through them easily so they will provide mobility advantages.
How will transporting the MCC work
Eventually I would like to have eve players participate in this somehow, but since we are talking strictly legion I suspect each side will have several warp designation points on the planet, if a side has no "Warp Designation Points" then they will be unable to get new MCC's into the battle, if all enemy MCC's are then destroyed the planet will automatically be won by the controlling side.

How will orbitals work
Squad commanders will call in orbitals which will then be relayed to the MCC and EVE players over head, eve players will see all the orbitals being called in across the whole planet which might be numerous, assuming they are in position long enough they can call them in when ready.
To be ready to fire a shot it will operate a lot like they do now, but it will be harder to remain in orbit with the planet firing back at you.
what's in it for the eve players
The planets should basically reward faction play at this point, giving bonuses to the controlled faction, and other bonuses to operating with that faction.
Closing Statement
This is just a loose Idea of how you could implement a sandbox war, I neither expect it to happen, nor do I expect it to be implemented like this if it was. all I'm trying to do is demonstrate that their is more that can be done outside of small scale meaningless pub matches. |

in that 1 hour what do you think they said that this was going to be anything but a lobby shooter?
seperating game modes by meta level of equipment is not sandbox.
picking your missions in a different way is not a sandbox, It's better yes, and many things i've heard are good but they are just ways to improve dust as a lobby shooter.

by all means elaborate?
aside from the fact that as I mentioned above this is just a rough idea, that should not be implemented as written, what do you believe is a bad idea about it?
This is an example of what a sandbox experience is not how to do it exactly. |

I would like to see battles for district in Legion being like the battles we have in Red Orchestra 2.
Players have a set amount of "soldiers" and need to attack the obectives and turn them to their side. the defender have to hold these objectives and issue counter-attacks.
Its not like today where theres a map and people running pretty much all over. Geography there counts and you know what side you need to push, like a real battlefield. Comanders have time ti plan and issu attack orders, plus call in artillery. Theres also value in defending positions.
I wish Legion got rid of the lobby game modes of today and really focused in delivering war in space. The only options should be Conquest (take the district) and Raiding (plunder the district).
Conquest would be the normal mode, where a corp attacks territory fro domination.
Raiding is what pirates do. You raid a territory, win if you slaughter all defenders, and take off with the plunder and loot.
