For those of you who have never played Eve Online but obviously played Dust, then you know that Legion will eventually have a secondary market very much like Eve Online does. But you are probably wondering what are the benefits of the secondary market and what to expect from this. Well, here is a video posted by Eve Mogul that gives you such an idea of how it would go using Eve Online's market as an example.
Eve Online Station Trading - "Instant ISK" Eve Mogul Market Trading Guide
With Salvage being the likely principle commodity in Legion (if it gets the green light - hurry up, Hilmar) let's look at that first.
The first major benefit the secondary market offers is ignorance. Pure, unadulterated ignorance. You can expect inexperienced players to constantly fire sell their stock in the market without giving it a second thought as to what price they're selling at. To these players, they think they got that salvage from the match for free so they just fire sell the salvage such as a stack of armor plates or a stack of plasma rifles into the market and get ISK instantly from you (the buyer) who already set the buy order to below market value. You then turn that around and sell it at a marked up price and then profit from the difference.
The second major benefit is that it offers you the ability to make a decent, self-sustainable profit without ever needing to leave your merc quarters let alone fire a single bullet, laser, or swarm rocket. So if you completely suck at firing a gun and can't hit the broadside of a barn with it but you're excellent at crunching numbers and data like a skilled day trader on Wall Street, then this is the right profession for you.
The third major benefit is that it can be a supplemental (secondary) source of income instead of being your main income. If you find trading to be too boring for you and want to go back to the battlefield, you can go fight while your portfolio if working for you in the meantime and all you have to do is check back on it every once in a while to see how it is. Kind of like checking on your 401K while you're busy working as an aircraft mechanic at an airport. This can be especially helpful in case you just got out a bad match where you died 15 times in an expensive fit.
The fourth major benefit... market pvp. This will ensure that the price of the commodities remain fairly stable as it's pretty obvious you're not going to be the only one diving into trading competing for those precious margins. There will always be someone out there who wants to undercut you especially if your price happens to be too high.
The fifth and most important major benefit to all this: The ISK is never generated from thin air. The ISK you earn is strictly from another player. You are merely distributing the wealth from one player to another. In fact, you're actually destroying a little bit of ISK every time you setup and modify a buy/sell order and whenever you have to pay NPC sales tax for the transaction if is sells.
Oh... I almost forgot one more benefit to all this.
If you happen to be good enough at trading and you figured out something in the market that not that many players know, you can use that to grab the attention of large alliances who are looking for people like you to help them try and corner the market before their competitors can.
