So I have an Alt with 17 million passive unallocated SP,I thought I was pretty smart and created him just he would be fully prepared to be a full time Jet Pilot and dominate the skies. My logic failed in not realizing it was only a matter of time before the game died. Anyway I've just spent all 17 million on tanking, I've never played as a tanker before and I have very little knowledge about tanks in general, so here I am hoping you guys can help me enjoy this last bit of fun by giving the rundown on this tanking business.
1.) How do I steer? Seriously is my game broken, it takes an incredible moment of twisting and turning the joysticks for a long period of time before im able to turn the way i want to go.
2.) Is Armor or Shields better for tanking? Pros and cons?
3.) Any suggested fits?
4.) Why is the vehicle skill tree so f#cked up? Electronics, Engineering, HAV Operation. All leveled up to 5 and for what? Nothing. great job putting in skills that have the exact same name as the Dropsuit skills but have absolutely no correlation.
5.) How do I activate my modules? is it automatic?

1. Use keyboard for driving (madrugar), thats the only way for this thing
2. Armor for blasters, shield for rails. Generaly armor is better. Therses no need for pros and cons.
3. Madrugar : i suggest ion cannon+cpu+repair+hardener+dmg mod all complex , or ion+ 2hards/reps + 1 rep/hard
4. You'll get use of most things from lv5 reqiurment (eg. armor modules, cpu upgrades)
5. Active modules by chosing tbem, click R2 |

Why thank you sir. I'll try out that madrugar fit. So from what you've told me it's better to just buy Madrugars and stay away from gunlogi's?

Shields are much easier to fit all things considered. They are swimming in CPU. Shields are a lot stronger for a single fight with their better hardeners. Cons for shield tanks is the vulnerability of the ambush; a single shot before you turn your hardeners on will slaughter your shields. An armor tank taking a single shot before turning their hardener on will lose mostly shield and no armor. A shield tank will lose a large amount of their EHP from that first unhardened shot.
Armor tanks are more consistent. Their hardener has a much shorter cooldown and their passive repair allows them to soak medium amounts of damage over an extended time. Burst damage will slaughter an armor tank quite quickly. Ever AV weapon aside from Flux Grenades and Plasma Cannons do more damage against armor than shields.
With 17 million, you should be able to get both armor and shield very easily. Only put as much points into Armor/Shield Fitting Optimization as you need to fit stuff. I went a little overboard with my Armor Fitting Optimization as I believe that PG would be a problem in 1.7 as it was in 1.3-1.6 but that was nit the case. I have ~16 million in tanks. Counting the points that I seriously didn't need because I never use them (scanners, damage mods) I probably have about a million that is not useful.
Why did you put more than a single point into HAV operation? Did you not read it and see that it is a dead skill?
I generally don't bother with higher level weapons nor damage mods. Damage mods, especially for Madrugars, burn a ludicrous amount of CPU. Higher level weapons offer minimal advantages and cost much more both in the ISK and fitting department. I think that you get more bang for your buck with standard weapons but it is a personal preference thing more than anything else really.
If you are using a mouse and keyboard for driving a tank, which I highly suggest, you activate modules by holding the middle mouse button or capslock, highlighting the module you want to use with the mouse, and then releasing capslock/middle mouse. You can practice with a logistics suit and equipment to get an idea how it works.
Good luck!

I have learned this recently. The machine is a stickler when it comes to using a controller to maneuver it. The KB/M works wonder not only in handling the beast, but also in firing its turrets.
Overall this poster has given you good advice. Take heed. |

This is only my personal opinion.
Maddies are all around good and a nuisance to everything that stands before it. Also it is armor based and from my experience, armor is a better defense then shields, which Gunloggis are based upon. The maddies are slow to compensate its brutality.
I would say that the gunloogis are good, if fitted properly, for taking out other tanks if fitted with a missle turret.
So the moral of the story is, go with the Maddie. You will have much fun. |

Thanks for the help guys I haven't had this much fun on dust in a while!
Ok I've been playing with the mouse and keyboard for tanks and the handling improvement is 100x better, still crappy handling but much easier. So far I've lost about 20 tanks, mainly due to other tanks being able to spot a noob tanker like myself from a mile away.
One problem I have though is the Mouse wheel and the way to active your modules. Having to move your mouse in order to activate a module while in a gun fight or making your escape makes absolutely no sense. I've died the most due to this very reason.
Also is it just me or is the turret turn speed super slow? I literally having to pick up my mouse and swipe about 10 times just to make a 180GÇó turn. My mouse is 3500 Dpi Razr Deathadder and my sensitivity is all the way at 100...

I thought there were multiple tiers of tanks just like dropsuits. I guess you could say if was my fault for not reading the description but I've been playing this game long enough to know what everything does or should do just by reading the title. Nice one CCP.

And yes, it is atrociously slow, especially with the railgun. The Turret Proficiency skill does not work and it hasn't for some people since about 1.4 and it hasn't for anyone since 1.8, which is when I noticed that it was moving much slower than before. I filmed the difference between two characters. With 4 points in Railgun Proficiency, it should be 40% faster but it isn't. Joseph has 5 ranks in Blaster Proficiency and 4 ranks in Railgun Proficiency. These were the times when I filmed a complete turn with the controller (more consistent than mouse for this test) with a militia Rail/Blaster on Sica between Joseph and a character with zero points in tanks:
Blaster Speeds. Joseph: 7.49 and 7.46. Third test was messed up as I couldn't tell when exactly it completed its spin. Alt: 8.92, 8.93, and 8.94
Railgun speeds: Joseph: 17.15, 17.14, 17.13 Alt: 17.52, 17.59, 17.53.
The ticket response was essentially "That doesn't seem right. I can't promise that the skills are not working properly as I do not know the exact formula they are supposed to follow but e-mails have been sent. We are looking into it."
So it is something they know about and all we can do is wait for them to fix it. It is a massive pain though on how slow it is. To compensate, you can rotate your tank while moving the mouse to align it a bit faster.

Lol, you spent sp on tanks. I made that mistake too. You don't need one sp in tanks to do anything with them. Militia tanks and mods are as good as complex and standard.

One, most every post has downplayed the gunnlogi.
Da ****?
Slap triple damage mods on that baby and armor tank it.
OR
Double damage mods and a Nitro, then armor tank it.
I wreck maddies in just a few shots. Not to mention the superior agility and acceleration a gunnlogi has, so I can run circles around the enemy turret if need be.
But I consistently wreck **** with gunnlogis.
Edit: And what's up with people saying there is no difference between proto and MLT.
One extra slot (meaning one extra mod), more damage, MUCH shorter cooldowns. Though I average one tank loss per 5 to 10 matches.

And Tebu Gan is fairly correct.
Ever since the nerf of Hardeners, damage mods have gotten much more deadly. When hardeners were 40/60, having a 30% damage increase seemed fine enough. Now that hardeners are 25/40, 30% damage increase is too powerful. I would hope that they get nerfed to 20% to be in line with the ~33% nerf to hardener effectiveness.
In short, defense was weakened while offense was not. Ironic consider 1.8 was all about increase TTK when vehicle v vehicle TTK went down considerably.

How are you guys fitting proto weapons and modules on your tanks? I can't even fit more than 2-3 enhanced modules with just 1 basic large turret before I'm over my CPU/PG limit :/
Is there a skill I'm not seeing that raises CPU/PG?

It kinda makes me agree with the guys who've said you don't need to put in any SP into taking. I think you need some SP invested to be decent but that's about it, no need to go full level 5 everything. Especially since there aren't any tiers of tanks so everyone's tank is essentially the same, the turret turn speed skill doesn't work and I can't even fit proto weapons or modules if I wanted to. I'm still having fun but I feel I could've spent way less than 17 million on tanks and still have a decent tank. Disappointing to say the least.
It's all in the passive skills i.e. fitting optimisations ect all levles up to 5.

If you put dmg mod to proto rail, then youre so fking easy to kill as you can wreck others. Blasters (especialy with dmg mod) wreck them to tbe ground.
Yes your gonna wreck maddy with missiles, and what? Roll tbere rail and missile guy will flee to redline.

Overwall, theres a reason so much people use maddys over gunlogis. They use maddy for triple rep with decent buffer. Rail gunlogi with 2 damage mods and armor tank will 2 shot a maddy. Large missiles kill maddys in one unload. I like rails better for tank killing. If you are a good pilot though you can kill missile and rail tanks with a triple rep ion blaster maddy. Tanks are rock paper scissor terrain. Every tank can beat another one, but it is all about location location location. You need proto guns though, if you don't have proto guns then a dual rep Soma will eat you alive |
