I really wish DUST 514 had text chat but I realise its not so practical for DS3 users, and as a KB/M player I was the exception not the norm.
However please consider it for Legion. Like others have said, not everyone can be on comms. Not only that, it really would help to direct or co-ordinate new players and randoms on your team.
The main reason though.... how can I troll my enemies by asking them if they have seen my remotes before I detonate them in their face? Come on CCP you guys are the world leaders in troll enablement!

But... There is text chat.
It's just not very useful.

I know that a chat interface is being considered (similar to EVE). During the Keynote, you can see the prototype has fields for this in the Merc Quarters. I don't know how much of this is being developed for in-game play too but it would make sense to have it in some capacity (imo!)

I'm not sure if it is too early to say or even if you guys have reasons for or against but most FPS games have chat that pops up in game. Actually the vast majority of online PC games have this and I think it would be a small but great feature to include.
There are many reasons this would be a benefit, not just for new player coordination and trolling :)
Arkena Wyrnspire wrote:But... There is text chat.

Oh I understand that it is there, but you are exactly right. Its not terribly useful when you have to stop what you are doing and pull up a totally separate menu to check what is being said.
Not only that, that only applies for team mates / squad mates. (I am not sure if Local works as a ~say to ALL~ type thing.)

Again, this was only in the Merc Quarters so I'm not sure how that will pan out in-game.

If I'm in a fast paced, up in your face game, the last thing I want is a spew of text in the corner. I'd even have the killfeed made optional. Actually, just make most/all of the interface optional. The Youtubers among us would be delighted with that option.

I agree completely with DUST Fiend. Having chat forced on me in games is incredibly frustrating. You know the kinds of stuff people say to one another in a competitive environment? Especially in FPS games on PC?
If chatting is easy to use and easy to see, we'll have people saying "wow" or "wdf" every time they die. Or they'll be fighting with each other over how soft drinks are this and that and everyone is a hypocrite for something or another. I don't want to see it, I don't want to take part in it, and I don't want it pushed in my face.
Or worse, they'll be using racial or homophobic slurs to insult one another and calling everything that kills them OP and starting fights with people CONSTANTLY for no reason. This type of stuff shouldn't be thrown in people's faces like it is in PC games, yet companies keep designing their UI to force global/local chat and not allowing people to remove the chat window entirely. Please don't be another one of those companies CCP.
If I want to be anti-social, there should be a toggle to satisfy me. If I join a corp. and want to talk, then I should be able to opt into corp. chat, and not global or local chat. Also, why should 20% of my screen be reserved for kids to harass me or one another? If they want to fight with words on the internet that's fine, let them do that, but make it easy for me to never have to see it.
Please do not force me to view chat if I don't want to. And PLEASE do not put a tiny flashing icon on the side of my screen either if I opt out of battle chat.

well, since the mouse mechanics work different on an fps game than they doe in eve online (basically you have NO mouse on an FPS available) Why dont we have a chat window which you can minimize but still habe at hand, and for going in the "interface" mode where your actual mouse cursor shows up we use a key, like steam does? I really like the way steam handles the overall comjunity, and thats definately a part where legion can learn from other companies.

Window that can be resized, including (but not limited to) minimizing, maximizing and deleting 3. Repositioning and/or category separation. Do you people even know what a phobia is? If I say I dislike mushrooms for instance does that mean I have a phobia of mushrooms? Of course not. Stupid wording conventions. However I am not homophobic I just think its stupid to say no to a feature which has the potential to really help players co-ordinate just because of what a few might do. Chat systems are part and parcel of EVE. However I am totally in agreement that should you want to turn elements of the UI off, you can do so. That's your choice. Just dont make a choice for others before it is even implemented in the game for gods sake.
So wait, you quoted me to say that "homophobia" is a stupid word, and that you're not homophobic? You know what types of people are drawn to FPS games, right? A lot of them are a bit underdeveloped mentally due to their age, and using homophobic (yes, that word actually applies here) insults is a real thing. You play many FPS games? Or were you one of those types of people when you were little? Rhetorical questions, I don't actually care.
And for the record, in a first person shooter where the action is fast paced, using text chat to coordinate a team is incredibly challenging, no matter how fast you type. Better off being on voice chat. Best thing to use text chat in a FPS for is recruiting and idle chit-chat.
I would also like to state that you quoting me to veer waaaaay off-topic only to then agree with me in the most backhanded way you possibly could is the reason people like me want options to disable chat.

In this case you mean like how local in in all normal space for eve?
Perhaps it could be like it is in K-Space , delayed until you either speak up in the channel or maybe they could make it so that once you are spotted / commit aggression , then you show up maybe? |

Do you play EVE? If not, the chats have tabs at the top, you can double click them and the window minimizes down to where it just shows the tab and flashes when a message is typed ( the flash can be turned off as well). I like this idea because it orks well in EVE, why wouldn't it in Legion?

Chatter from the TEAM and SQUAD chats should be shown in the in-battle HUD by default, in the style of the Killfeed.
This would greatly improve the NPE, and also provide some direction to un-squadded/un-micced bluedots.
Squad messages should be Green, Team messages should be Blue.
Long term, it would be nice to expand the system to overlay any chat channel you would want, in any color you want, but I think that the above is a good enough solution for launch. |
