Having seen CCPs ideas for PVE in this trailer I was hoping we could discuss what we think PVE should be like in Dust 514.
The rogue drones presented in the trailer and the 2013 fanfest keynotes show a PVE that will be very rock-paper-scissor in nature.
Drones advance in waves of varying quantities and difficulties. Later waves would presumably be made up of bigger drones that would need bigger guns to eliminate.
I believe PVE in Legion should involve human-like adversaries that take cover, run, retreat and use squad tactics against us players. This may require some advanced AI programming however the experience will be much more entertaining and captivating than fighting mindless hordes of opponents while simply jumping in and out of cover to avoid damage.
The lore behind Sanshas Nations (cyborg-human slaves) would be fitting for such.
The above is just a suggestion and instead of being the only form of PVE could be a single type of PVE mission amongst others (rogue drone horde mode).
What are your ideas as to what PVE should be?
Other ideas off the top of my head include;
- A predator hunt - hunting down a deadly predator that has been plaguing an installation (Alien)
- Recapturing PI installations from rogue drones

I actually hope Rouge Drones are not the only type of NPC AI we see in Legion. I would like both Guristas pirate bases to capture and being hunted by CONCORD for being naughty.
Why are drones the only thing we should fight (apart from real people)? |

My guess is that where people are involved CCP would like PVP. For example A Guristas base may be under attack so they put up a defence contract which is accepted by another Player Corp, a PVP battle ensues.
The idea behind rogue drones and sansha zombies must be that as a player you are fighting an a.i. ingame......and in real-life |

Rogue (and/or hostile-controlled) drones are nice, but that's just one faction. The AI for them might be a bit simpler (not that I'm a programmer or anything), so it's a good start. I'd like to see the pirate factions pop up in humanoid form as well, though. Human infantry & vehicles in the branding of the Angel Cartel, Blood Raiders, etc. all depending on whether you're in space they operate in (just like their ships pop up in EVE).
I'd be fine with CCP adapting EVE's other PvE systems to Legion. - Salvaging! An EVE newbro staple. I've heard that CCP is already working on something involving loot-dropping enemy drones to shoot at. - Want to shoot rocks all day? Go for it. Maybe the materials mined from planets could be different from those mined from asteroids and those materials could be used to make infantry gear and vehicles. If CCP is lazy, the minerals could even just be lower-quality versions of the current minerals in game. Alternatively, instead of shooting rocks with mining lasers, the aforementioned salvaging system could be adapted and mining drones could drop minerals. This could make the two PvE modes feel kind of redundant, though. - Industry! Use the mining and salvaging materials listed above and make stuff. Invention could be worked in, too. - Want to do something that aids an EVE player's PI? Great, take a cut of the materials or something. - Mission running is almost a no-brainer. Some basic story arcs could be thrown in and, as long as there's AI to shoot, adding missions is pretty much a must. - If we somehow get large, open world planets, then exploration and hacking could come into play.
Of course, the rewards, quality/price of materials, etc from these activities should be scaled in value depending on the security status of the system you're in (as well as the current market, of course). If you're in lowsec or nullsec, however, you're going to have to run the risk of hostile players coming in, shooting you, and taking whatever drops. Mechanics for how they get there will have to be worked in. I have another suggestion for that.
[edit] Oh, and the time-honored tradition of hisec ganking followed by getting concordokken'd should be included. :3

Edited title and bump!
Other Points of discussion not mentioned in OP;
- How does NPE fit into PVE?
- How can PVE be merged/linked with EVE?
- Will it be combat only? Or do we get to try our hand at mining?

I imagine that the drone horde mode is actually a left over from Dust. Also, I got the impression that their idea was more based on exploration so far: Load into an environment , and go scanning and looking for said drones. Horde mode basic mission would be easy enough to do, and I think it would be really fun.
All that said, I imagine that a basic mission structure, like in eve, will be coming to legion sooner or later. |
