Yes, I'm one of the angry ranters about this whole debacle. That's not what this thread is for though.
Do I feel like CCP have screwed up bigtime with this announcement? Yes. Is it because Legion being a PC-based evolution of DUST is a bad thing? #*$& NO.
Moving to PC is a brilliant move. It's a brilliant move we should have been told about AAAAGES ago and definitely, DEFINITELY before the big sales came up, and EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY NOT AT FANFEST... but that doesn't negate the fact that it's a brilliant move.
This is exactly the kind of thing DUST needed.
But here's the thing... it's what DUST needed. It's not something that should be an independent new project while DUST is left to slowly fall apart and fade into obscurity.
Legion should be the next big expansion for DUST. Sure, it can be a big expansion that will be a long time in the pipeline. And sure, they can SLOW - not stop - the flow of new content while they work on the bigger project. Announcing WELL IN ADVANCE OF FANFEST that the plan was going to be moving forward with the intention to move DUST to PC before PS4 would have been a not-completely-moronic move. Leading on from that, the Legion presentation would have been AWESOME instead of rage-inducing, disappointing and downright offensive.
So, how do they make this right? And how should DUST and Legion proceed now that the cat's several months late dragging itself out of the bag?
Core content is still missing from DUST, in spite of the "release" claims we've heard. Things that are perfectly reasonable for the playerbase to expect on PS3 are still missing.
MTACs would be great - I've wanted them since they were first announced (actually before then, because I've always been a fan of mechs, but I've REALLY wanted them since I found out there was lore in New Eden backing the idea up). But they aren't core content, and it's not really reasonable to ask for the additional strain to be put onto the game servers for handling another vehicle type with unique movement profile and functionality. They can save these for the eventual PC/PS4 release.
The first of the IMPORTANT things is PvE - Rogue Drones have been on the table for the PS3 version for YEARS without making release. It is PERFECTLY REASONABLE to expect some form of PvE in DUST on the PS3. There's NOTHING outlandish about that request.
The next thing is the player market. This is KEY to making DUST feel like a real part of New Eden, and it's once again something which SHOULD BE POSSIBLE ON THIS CONSOLE. There is NO valid reason for this not to happen in DUST. None at all.
Those two key elements should be absolutely not negotiable in my mind. HOW they happen is up for debate, but the fact of them happening is absolutely NOT.
Another important, and relatively small, feature we should have been given a while back is proper corp and alliance controls. This is, as with the other important points, totally possible for the PS3 to handle. It isn't a key feature for DUST like PvE and a player market should be, but it's still important and viable on the console, and it's something that really should happen.
As for content that's already in the game, there's a lot of work needed. This work - fixing Planetary Conquest, fixing the occasional bug still floating around the cloak, and a lot of other small problems to clean up - is already in the pipeline, but it's happening slowly. It SHOULD be more of a priority, even if Legion is being pushed at the same time.
Get the existing content working properly, and do so relatively fast, then start on the next wave of new content. DON'T rush with the new content though, let it take a bit of time whle you've got a significant portion (not necessarily the majority) of the DUST team working on Legion.
Maybe, just maybe, there could be a pre-Legion update - a "Legion Lite" version released to PS3 with this limited extra content, as a taster/preparation for what Legion is going to be. When the ACTUAL Legion build appears, it would run side-by-side with the PS3 version of the game at least for a while. Probably in this pre-Legion form for a transition/beta period before the PS3 version is phased out. |

When the game's released, I want a functioning player market, a close to balanced FPS(I believe most FPSes are hard to balance completely), a properly working Planetary Conquest, a functioning system for transferring funds between games, the destruction of the lobby-shooter form they've been using and a more creative contract system, actual EVE connections, CEOs having the ability to allocate the damn corporate shares...
I expect some top stuff when the game releases just because of how they handled this crap. They could've at least made Dust a testing ground for features in Legion, made that clear at Fanfest, and continue to update the game with experimental stuff so that we wouldn't be left out while they work on and release Legion for the PC. Then when it finally goes to the PS4, Dust begins to shut down slowly but surely as they start to transfer the stuff to the PS4(because I can't see why a transfer to the PS4 wouldn't work).
That would've turned this fiasco around and at least make Dust worth playing.

Focused lasers, more burning trees, fog and dildos.
Oh, and everything they f*cking promised us for DUST. They have no excuse. By the time Legion beta is released they better f*cking have it all if they want to even begin to justify ever having moved it back to PC so soon before even giving DUST all the basic racial content.
Lol, you can't ban me forever CCP!

I really want to see larger player counts to go with larger maps. If there's enough PvE stuff throughout the universe (surely there's quite a bit of war going on) you could just have people drop in/out at will into the scavenger zones at will with little risk of actually filling the instance to capacity. Also, with the PvE stuff, they need to introduce the ability to blue/red/neutral anyone you meet on-planet.
Then you expand that system to battles (I've said this before), if they want the game to be a lot like Eve but on the ground, teams in corp v corp warfare needs to be as malleable as Eve's warfare is. Each warbarge on the field is the top of a chain of command that leads from the barge and commander to individual squad leaders to individual squad members, you can leave and request command at will. Deployed equipment exists at the warbarge level, so without a link to a warbarge you can't do too much. If you die without a link to a warbarge you're removed from the match as you end up clone jumping to whatever station you were last stationed at. If they find that they can make the playercounts large enough, they might even be able to make "How many individual players you can get into this sector fighting for you" part of the game mechanics rather than just being a hard rule.
For example, your warbarge has module slots. The most basic use (so basic they come with one permafit) is to fit a Clone Uplink module, this is how your mind is saved and cloned when you die. The module has a limited bandwidth however, you can only have a maximum of, say, 16 soldiers per module. 16 people dying at precisely the same time maxes out the module, any more on surface and you risk dropping someone from the match. The cool part about these modules is that they provide a natural scheme for the chain of command, by default with 16 for example, 1 commander leading a squad of 3 other squad leaders with a squad of 4 squad members nested beneath each of them. Roll that back into the PvE system and you can go from running about on your own scavenging to running into someone under a heavy onslaught of drones to rolling with them in their squad after saving them to being invited into their corp to run as a squad member... sound familiar?
For all of its lore, visuals, and items, Dust never really felt like a game set in New Eden, mainly because it didn't feel like you had the same freedom of action that you do in Eve. Stuff like this, a framework that players fill out and use to their taste (1 commander, however many SLs, however many SMs per SL), is a way to give people that freedom and make it feel like a sandbox MMO, even if it is instanced. Even the B-roll they've released shows that they're going for a much more sandbox'y game, what with planetary conditions that affect gameplay. (That Scorched planet seen in the reveal increases overheat, allows weapons that normally couldn't overheat to overheat, and provides a bonus to thermal damage for instance. Straight out of Eve's wormhole gameplay, fits the universe, and provides a cool addition to FPS gameplay)
Of course in the end you still need structured matches for basic pick up and play, but that's just how future bloodsport rolls man. (I bet the Gallente hate it)

Instead they've confirmed that there will be no major new content, so when the servers close it will be the same quarter-finished game it is today. I know this isn't what they CURRENTLY plan to do with Legion.
I'm saying it's what I WANT them to do.

You guys are insane. The whole fundamental premise of Dust is broken. A tiered, time/SP-grind based lobby shooter with randomised maps ... I could go on forever.
Whatever you think about how they did it (and I think they are grade-A @$$holes) you better hope they aren't making Dust HD.
The only way Legion will avoid being a giant DustFail2.0 is for them to completely re-envisage the game and rebuild from the ground up. |

The fundamental premise of DUST is what CCP are promising for Legion. The tiered, time/SP-grind based lobby shooter with randomised maps ISN'T the vision that was DUST. It's you focusing down onto small elements that are a part of what basically amounts to a minigame inside the framework of what DUST is meant to be.
Whatever you think I was trying to suggest, you're wrong. I don't want them to be making Uprising HD, or even stepping back and making Chromosome HD.
Legion, whether it happens as a new build for DUST like I want, or as a standalone product like they're currently advertising it, will fail miserably if they just tweak the current mechanics instead of rebuilding many aspects of the game from the ground up.
EDIT: Also, +1 because even though it wasn't the politest way to explain your point, it was valid constructive criticism. And I certainly can't claim to always be polite about presenting my own point of view. |
