Charitable souls of the community, does anyone wish to donate some ISK in order to make benefit a noob attempting to learn how to properly dropship?
I love the whole idea of being in a tactically placed vehicle, but damn is it expensive! I'm still running militia dropships, but even then I struggle to keep ISK in my pocket, and I often spend a lot more time on the things that I don't really want to spend time on (grinding with starter fits).
I get that dropships are kind of a thing for the rich and famous, but I'm stubborn, and I want to become a good pilot.
Any amount helps.......pls......... |

Starter fits, ambush for an hour. ISK generated
For tips, check out The Learning Coalition in rookie training grounds. They can assist you with DS training

So you have to learn about ISK management in the time you play. Obviously you are going to keep running into the red the way you are playing. Not trying to be mean or offensive, just the truth. You want to remain ISK positive. If you got two hours on the weekend, then play one of those hour of nothing but ambush in Starter Fits, to compensate for your losses until you become a better pilot and have a better DS.

Hmm....tough stuff. Newb dropship pilots get it hard. It's something for the rich, as you said.
I would help you but I'm somewhat broke myself.

Just trying to learn how to fly, or trying to ferry troops across the battlefield? Just a bit curious, the militia ships are under 50K Isk, which is pretty cheap, and if you fit it right, they're nearly invincible to all but rail turrets.

Ok, just a suggestion. How about you grind for a few until you can get a better DS and get better modules for it? Have a farming fit that can will help you gain more SP. Build your DS as you do this. Then when your DS is a bit tougher then bring out.

If I had been smart I wouldn't have even flown until I had the base skills maxed out. The survivability is insanely different that when you first start flying.
Even maxed out on most skills (turret optimization is 1.6 mill SP) it's tough.
I lose dropships all the time. It doesn't get cheaper either.
Find a corp with a pilots program. Some corps fund their pilots. Add the "1st Airborne" chat and talk shop with other pilots.
Find a corp through them too.
We can pickle that.

The DS is a flying coffin. Fly cheaply as possible, do not deploy unless you can afford to lose it. To learn to fly find maps that have large areas out side of the conflict. Domination works well although many of the maps will not support testing flying.
Smooth control inputs at first, then more expansive maneuvers. Learn how to use the Fuel Injector to GTFO and avoid by flying straight up (mostly).
As the esteemed @Michael Arck stated more help is available.
The specific improvement I would suggest is to not fly MLT gear as quickly as possible. Fly STD - Not Assault Drop Ships (ADS). They are seriously over-priced currently and very fragile. MLT gear handles differently and will do nothing for your skills. ADS will require another (shorter) learning pass.
Pick One type, Armor or Shield. Armor is less agile, shields are fragile. Your choice. Do not skill into unneeded skill until you have time and SP to burn.
Do not spend any SP in Caldari or Gallenti Drop Ship Skills. They are not worth it until you have their precursor Assault Drop Ships at level 5. That is worth it.
Also, pick missiles first if your plan is ADS. If not choose what gunners like most. Particle Accelerators if they are good shots and Missiles if you can fly smoothly enough and hover long enough for them to get kills. There is no need to do both until you are good enough to fly with any ship/turret combination.
Stay focused and Good Luck.
And so it goes.

Ok tips for you is what you will get from me. 1 stop flying so low to the ground stay at about 300 meters in the air or higher and learn to fly from up there. Its boring as hell but you will get good practice in on how to move as well as hover which always comes in handy when you got a gunner. As for isk you are on your own best to just keep running starter fits and play alot of ambush. You can get about 4-6 skirmish matches done in 2 hours but you can get 2-3 times that many ambush matches done in the same amount of time.

I remember learning to fly myself. lol i think i already shot him down at least once before reading this post :P oops yeah dude its a bit rough learning but going easy on him wont help him any. he has to learn how to avoid being attacked as well as how to escape when he starts getting hit. He wont learn any of that if we dont take pot shots at him.

First of all look up Judge Rhadamanthus' flying tutorials on YouTube. Those should give you a good takeoff (pun intended) in your flying ability.
Next, join 1st Airborne chat ingame and come hang with other pilots. Just please don't spam chat asking for ISK.
As far as playing goes, while you're learning, just hang out in the redline and practice your maneuvers. Odds are you'll only lose ships to your own mistakes. In order to passively get some war points, place a few uplinks here and there that look enticing to blueberries, that usually nets enough to place top 5-7, meaning more ISK payout.
Best of luck and fly safe. I should be on later today of you want to squad up, just message me. o7

BTW i say stay at or above 300 meters so that rail and blaster tanks and turrets wont be able to start blasting at you. However you will still have to worry about missile tanks and turrets (since they have a longer range) as well as assault dropships or dropships with gunners. However both missile and assaults dropships are easy to avoid if you just keep moving. And although an assault dropship can follow and fire they can only follow you so far so when you encounter one just head for your team redzone after a bit the enemy ship will turn and leave. Missiles are easy to avoid if you just keep moving side to side. So just run a zig zag when you start getting pelted by those since most people running missile turrets are a crap shot. (and i dont mean small zig zags either)

There is promise in you young pilot. Dropships are not just for the rich, I started just like you grinding on the ground in my medic starter fit to have those sweet few seconds in the air. Its pretty hard at fist but if you love flying then it pays off. I'd love to donate you some isk but i!m not much better off... It doesn't really get easier. Though if you see me in 1st airborne or are me on hit me up for a squad and I'll teach you all I can. |

Put a heavy repper on a Gorgon (militia is all that's needed, unless you've got the skills to do otherwise) I have one on mine (Troop transport and such) and anything that's not proto swarms or a decent forge gunner is unable to kill me. I had an advanced swarmer the other day trying to shoot me down, I literally landed in front of him, got out of my dropship for about a minute while I tried to win the game of Ring around the Rosie that started, with him firing the whole time, and he never destroyed my ship.
