I'm assuming you're talking about the non-racial variants rather than STD gear in general. Racial gear costs less because they cost more sp to use, while sharing pretty much the same stats as the non racial variants.
Non racial gear isn't much more expensive so no need to get your panties in a bunch about it, just need to save up sp for your racial variants is all.

What used to happen was the ISK payout from 5-16th was decent. If you didn't die Excessively then you could make a profit and play the game. Since the first of 2014, possibly earlier, CCP/Shanghai has been dramatically reducing the ISK payout for the lower positions. There is less ISK paid to the losing side and the maximums are more based on doing material damage then anything else that is apparent, to me anyway.
One might suspect that they got nervous about the vast amounts of ISK in the current Dust economy and decided to reduce it by making playing Dust a money losing proposition. Of course the reasons there are huge amount of ISK is only because of CCP/Shanghai and some of their earlier practices.
Now new players are struggling. And players that have not been aligned with a Corp that was raking in the huge ISK payments from the Broken For Months District Locking Exploit In PC that was something else decided, coded and installed in the game by our very own CCP/Shanghai. What goes around comes around doesn't it.
The current throttling of ISK is a detriment to fun. It makes Mercs even more concerned about earning enough ISK to buy Skill Books (at their obscene prices that have no rhyme or reason beyond EVE does it). Then the gamers become more concerned about gaming the F2P game by ensuring that they will not spend a penny on the game itself. Yet, boosters are not a bad investment overall. If you have a little spare cash you can buy a few and tweak out three to five days of booster and get an extra week of SP for the price. Just start with the full SP cap waiting a few days before shutdown, SP Cap the first week, server shutdown Wednesday, SP resets and SP cap the next week. 190,400SP extra.
But, CCP/Shanghai doesn't understand people wanting to spend money to support them. They understand extorting money from new people by refusing to pay their mercenaries a living wage. One might wonder what they are modeling the Dust economy on, it is partly P2W (Pay 2 Win aka 'not enough time not enough skill - buy AURUM today') and partly on some punitive scheme to make players focus on the 'worst part of the game'. Basically losing money day after day and then needing to AFK farm to get enough cash to buy enough gear to play with.
This is less of a problem once the Merc is a vet. But it definitely is a problem there as well as it is easy to lose money is this game about Immortal Mercenaries in Spaaace.
Welcome to Dust.
And so it goes.

This is on point. When I run my proto logi suit all tricked out with toys, if I die more than 4 or 5 times in a match, I'm taking a loss or at best breaking even. So I have to run standard/adv suits and fittings and just accept that I'm going to die more in order to make a profit. If you are on a losing team in the bottom half of the stack you are screwed. I had one ambush game where I was 9th or 10th on the losing team with like 230 WP or something. My stat line was like 2/9 or something close to that (like I said, I'm a Logi and I will admit it was a BAD game). I think the ISK payout was 85 or 90k. I was running my suit that is only 19k so I can at least be viable and not totally worthless, I LOST 90k. Running a cheap suit. Yes, I know you can build a suit for like 5 or 6 thousand. With a logi, there is no purpose. That 19k suit is an advanced Cal Logi suit (because the standard is absolutely worthless), basic Combat Rifle, standard nanohive, uplink, and nanite injectors, standard armor plating, and militia shield extenders. I don't even want to think about doing that with my 140K proto
Basically, the whole ISK payout is, in fact. severely skewed. If you are either a noob or not "on your gun game" for a particular match, making enough ISK to even cover losses is impossible. If low end payouts are going to be so pathetic, drop the cost of the militia/basic gear so a guy who takes 12-15 losses (hell, I've seen guys go 1-21 and that is not a guy just suiciding. I fought along side the poor soul for most of the match and the kid was at least trying) can at least make enough money to cover their suits and buy what they just lost. If we want to keep Adv./Proto suits/gear expensive, fine. But a basic 5k suit dying 20 times (like the kid I was talking about) is still 100,000 ISK. If I made 90k at 10th, and he was 16th, how much do you think he made that match. (it was a different match but still, I'm sure you get the point.)

Seems to me, the isk made at the end of the match has more to do with one's ratio of the team's total WP's.

Not really. I have done charts on it with logs from before the first of the year*. And WP does make a difference but the High Rewards have been closely tied to destruction of equipment; Installations, tanks, jeeps and Derps and PRO suits seem to make a difference (at least they used to).
What I recall was that we had more fun when we would occasionally lose ISK in a match. Now it is rare to make ISK and the game is decidedly less fun. Who wants to play a game where one of the main rewards you have to have is dribbled out such that you have to play very conservatively (to not lose suits/gear) or AFK to catch back up so you can play again. Seems wrong to me but Dust has fallen to that level. And it seems planned.
Games are less interesting and squads are raging more. Although it is probably because of climate change.
* I was logging everything because Dust was failing to give me WP for kills. It would show (for example) 6/0 the results would be 6k/3a/0d and the WP was 250WP. WTF? I filed a petition and several bug reports. It doesn't appear to be as bad as it was before but I have not tracked it like I had back then. Since I was logging anyway I logged everything, ISK, WP, kill board position, battle type, win/loss and it told some interesting tales. Not all of them good. The only people in non-PC battles that made 500K or more were destroying tanks left right and center.
And so it goes.

People destroying tanks left, right, and center make a ton of WP's and tend to have a decent gap between them and the next person in WP's. I've been in matches where I've only killed 5 or so people but getting 1,500-2,000wps from, hacking, hives, and uplinks while the rest of my team barely broke 500-800wp's and got 300k-500k depending on where everyone fell in those ranges. I've been in matches where I know I've killed 20 protos or a handful of tanks and got ~250k because the top 7 guys had roughly the same WP's.
Hell I've been in a match where I went 41/0 but only got just over 300k while the guy that was repping me got around 450k and he went 0/0/0 and was just repping me and throwing down hives and the rest of the team didn't even break 1,000wp's. I've been thrown into a match by myself vs 6 guys and only hacked the stuff close to the redline and got over 1mil at the end of the match because nobody else was on my team.
Based on what I've seen, what isk you get at the end of a match is clearly mostly influence by one's ratio of the teams total WP's.
Edit: Also, there is no kill board. The board displayed during (through the player list) and at the end of the match ranks people by WP's not kills.

@ Thumb Green - I think you are right that WP influence the ratio of the pay out, but what is destroyed in total seems to influence the total pool of ISK it is pulled from. I hardly get many kills or deaths, but plenty of WP due to uplinks/Hacks etc as I play a support scout. However - if we as a team destroyed plenty of proto/vehicles I can expect my pay to go from the usual ~200kISK to ~300k ISK.
Apologies if it has been mentioned - on my smoke break and skim reading.
