IIRC Arkena does, and the verdict is, it's still awful. The 1.8 proficiency changes were a serious stealth nerf to anti-shield weaponry.

Might as well. It's bound to get buffed in a few years, then you'll get to enjoy it while it's OP before it gets nerfed again.
Nova Knives are OP! Nerf em before you lose all your proto suits!

I skilled into Nova knives a few weeks ago, after skilling into Min. Scout Proto. Is the passive dmg bonus working now. The Ishukone's should do 400+ dmg with pro V, and the passive suit bonus.

Hi, prof 5 user here. I've not met any others of my kind.
It's bad. There's almost nothing it does that a scrambler pistol won't do much better. The general performance is lacklustre - it has terrible range and the damage is poor. OHKOing militia suits is good for a laugh though.
If you really want to go into it, I have the following tips:
1. Don't use the charge shot unless you absolutely must or aren't taking a fight seriously. It will cripple you for a small damage spike that definitely is not worth overheating for.
2. Be careful with the trigger. Even if you just rapid fire it, it sometimes overheats. This typically happens either in laggy situations or when you're tapping the trigger furiously, but sometimes it just seems to randomly happen. But by being careful with trigger discipline you can mitigate that.
3. Sharpshooter is your god. Worship it with all of your SP. The hipfire spread on the weapon is so large it's practically unusable past 5m without sharpshooter. It is quite possible to miss heavies with the hipfire spread at short range. It is absolutely critical that you reduce this spread if you want to use the weapon. This is probably the most important tip on the list.
4. The IoP has damage per clip issues. As a general rule, if the target has over about 600 HP, you won't be able to kill them with the ion pistol alone without having to go through either an overheat or a reload, either of which is likely to kill you in a real fight. Remember this when engaging targets. (I tend to get past this by using dual IoP if I'm in the mood for some masochism but I don't think that will appeal to you.)
So I'd say the overall answer to your question is 'No'. It's not really worth skilling into. I'm using it because it's a Gallente sidearm, something which I've been waiting on for literally years, and because I was stupid enough to take it to prof 5 on the first day of 1.8.
It's only 12k SP if you want to just give it a go though. But if you're looking for a pistol sidearm that functions like this I'd say the scrambler pistol is a much, much better option.
You have long since made your choice. What you make now is a mistake.
Oh, forums

I have been using the Ion Pistol, along with the Gallente assault, with every skilled maxed out except the ammo capacity which actually set me back to -700,000...simply you are better off using a SMG. I like it but I think that it would benefit from having a breach version.

Ive been using it on my heavy build.so awesome now I have a weapon for range shots. Its not ideal for a panic swap in the middleof a gun fight, but the advantage it offers while running it as my primary is fantastic.
I can only imagine as people from afar see me pistol sshooting them as i work my way closer to switch to my sidearm THE HMG. |

The thing overheats on half a charge. I literally can find nothing redeeming about this weapon.

Fun, but still not worth it. If they remove the stupid overheat from a single charge, I would love this gun to death.
