I'm going into Gallente Commando... but the only weapon I can think that falls under a "hybrid" weapon is the assault rifle and combat rifle. Is this seriously the only two weapons affected by the suit's bonus?

Correction, Combat Rifle is a Projectile Weapon. Your skill bonus effects Assault Rifles, Plasma Cannons, and Shotguns.

This is true, but from someone that spec'ed to lvl 5 Gal commando I'd say don't go that far in
Don't get me wrong it's a fun suit, but not competitive in any way. By the look of the weapons it gets a bonus to, it seems the primary role intended for he suit is CQC, but as it is currently stands any heavy with a HMG will DESTROY you, it's almost impossible to get close up fast enough to use a shotgun without being ripped to shreds and the suit has NO EWAR or slots to help it on it.
The other commandos have range in their weapons bonus, they can work the role of suppression specialist really good, not the Gallente variant unfortunately, the base AR is not bad, but IS outclassed by all other rifles, the AR variants well, just ugh...
Plasma Cannon, Ion pistol...
Just don't skill all the way unless you got SP to burn, this is of course my humble opinion.

AR + Shotgun is the most effective. Medium Range and CQC range. You can handle Scouts with the Shotgun and Assaults wit the Medium Range.

AR + Shotgun IS the most effective I've found, but scouts eat Gal Commandos for breakfast, they're slow, blind as a bat and not as tanked as a TRUE heavy.
I do admit it is fun to blow a careless scout with a shotgun blast, but any truly skilled scout won't have troubles dealing with you.

I sir, respectfully disagree.
I'm not a freaking uber vet 40+ mill sp (humble 22+) and I do pretty darn good. (Depending on the map, opponent, game type, etc). open beta began, I've gone against the grain, spreading my sp into a wider range of skills, rather than go proto first and then branch out. That trend became the "go to" way of playing, but not necessarily the way it was intended to be played IMHO.
Enter the "Galle-mander"
The commando is the first suit to complement my specific playstyle. Having only this suit at lvl 4, every light weapon at three, few at 5, cores maxed; it can be an absolute monster. I need more fittings space and file folders (talking to you guys CCP) because I have at least 12 commando fits alone. As few tinker fits of mlt, and side project amarr scout (lol) I can counter anything and everything almost. I'm not the greatest player, but then again, just found my niche.
The point I'm makin is simply this, the commando has a role, specific in design and function, and I think it's doing its job. The GaI is superior IMO because of the nature of being a support fighter, armor is the better option for me, never proffered shields, even when they where OP as hell. Having two light weapons, yes plz; equipment, oh yea!; no grenades is a bummer. But at least rich now, grenades kinda suck. I remember when a single AV nade used to takeout LAVs (pre murder taxi) and 3 for most Havs. It's lows are good for speed mods, or brick tank that sucker, hacker modded mofo? Damon straight! Its the most versatility crammed into one suit, with minor drawbacks.

Also, a AR+MD works well.

^This.
I use no HP mods on my Commando G/1, just 1 Comp Kin Cat, 1 Comp Cardiac Reg & 1 Comp DMG mod, with a Duvolle to take down shields and a BK-42 CR to chew through any remaining armour. Not the most deadly fit but very effective (in the right hands).

Hmm... perhaps give the standard AR a scope and remove the existing 3 variations in place of an assault plasma rifle with an improved rate of fire and ironsights? Then again, this is the wrong section of the forums for that.

Hybrid weapons are the following:
-Assault Rifle -Shotgun -Plasma cannon -Ion Pistol
Not really the best choice of weapons there for a commando. To be honest the Caldari commando is probs the most viable due to its bonus for Railgun weapons (rail rifle, magsec SMG and sniper rifles).

The tooltips in this game sucks. How does a new player suppose to know what a hybrid weapon is? Who does he suppose to know what kind of damage +/-% shield/armor does a weapon give? And a lot of other things.

To remark I say the dropsuit is not competitive, not to interpret this as the suit being useless I've taken my bullet head prototype bad boy into PC matches (when they were more globally accessible (thanks DNS )) but bigger hardier bad boys and faster cloaked bad boys slapped it to the ground.
Unlike what you mentioned I've always gone the specialization route, since I started playing it had been only one suit, one weapon, one sidearm and sticking to it for better or worse (Gallente Assault, AR, SMG) 1.8 came with the dropsuit respect and I moved all my SP from Gallente Assault to Gallente Commando giving it all the effort and dedication. My KDR has slowly but steadily been declining as a result, not that I give much importance to it, but it is a stat that if not abused, gives insight.
I find the "Ready for any situation" somewhat as false advertising for the suit honestly, the bonuses commandos get are restrained to certain types of weapons and they don't encompass a broad range of things to be ready for. I like you, have several fits to combat the most scenarios I can, but if you end up with something silly like say your Gal commando with a mass driver and scrambler rifle... what's the point? you're not playing the suit's strengths and intended role, it's not the optimal scenario you could be in.
The numbers game has the suit performing below stronger suits. It's hard to admit, but I think most agree.
Yet as I said, Gallente Commando is fun to play, a good player can do good in it - a good player can do good in ANY suit, but take that same player and don him in a better suit and he will do great. Of course your play style is also synergistic with the suit you use. A player that only snipes and is good at only sniping, will do bad even if he uses the pimpiest FOTM build.
I'd be more than happy to see fellow Galcoms swarming the point, more so being good at it. But do you see them often? I don't.
There's scant few players that use dropsuits or weapons for lore and style reasons, sticking with painfully obvious flaws, like a guy running a PLC blowing one or two redberries a match, or the guy that wants to get a precious kill with the Ion, sure there's a few PLC prodigies out there I'm sure, but I might be able to count them in one hand. My respect to those that don't give up and try to make their selections work.
Of course, my observations are as of 1.8, new builds might change this, like someone said, if the AR gets getter, who knows?
