I believe there should be some kind of penalty for deserting a battle. For better or worse just one person leaving a battle can change the outcome. Especially when another takes their place. Maybe something simple like ?? min. delay in joining that escalates each time to ?? amount of offenses. Could be refreshed each week or bought out of.

I agree.
Particularly with FW - I think it should cost you a few loyalty points for deserting a battle.
As for pubs - Not sure what we can do realistically. And often I can't blame a blueberry for quitting if a full squad of proto stompers are on the other team.
So I'd probably limit this for Faction Warfare

A deserter penalty would make more sense if matchmaking was anywhere close to balanced. People shouldn't be forced into slaughter.

Well, pubs are just a stones throw from FW. So, even though i get your point of possibly FW deserter only.... I have to say ppl use pubs to warm up and better themselves for possible FW matches. Children need consequences too.
Isnt the best time to adapt when you are losing? Finding ways in that battle or making changes for when you face it next. Even though ppl are really just hurting themselves by leaving(not overcoming), there are 15 others relying on your playstyle even if your a loner. I try to feel out what my teams direction is even when solo. It doesnt always work out, but I stay and see why.

Reminds me of yesterday when I went into a match and was like, alright time to kill. Next thing I know I see Jesus Picon quitting battle. Was like wtf is a top scoring player doing just quitting out before the battle begins. He saw a squad of Venesula Corp and a squad of Warning Label Inc and ran. That kind of put my opinion of him down, but there is no penalty for a player leaving the match and deserting his team. We had a good player and then got a terrible blue berry instead. Really wished there was a way to give him a Penalty.
I'm not too far from you, I can't wait to see you, again and again

bad idea... so when I get a "fatal error" in game and have to relog I get penalized as well?
so my kid hurts himself and I need to put the game down to tend to him I get penalized?
so when I'm up against DNS in one of their protostomps and I want to leave the battle because I'm a new player and cant afford to throw isk away like they do since match making is effed I get penalized?
need I go on?
do you see the error of this thought process?
this game makes me sad....

The punishment is not earning much isk from the battle. I admit its not much but there it is.
I'd rather see a system that compensates a new player to the match. Why should anyone contribute anything meaningful to a fight when they're automatically not getting as much for turning up late due to no fault of their own?
I've come in to matches only a quarter or third way through, still rank 2nd / 3rd on the board at the end and still not compensate for suits I would otherwise be able to replace if only I was there at the start.
It encourages players to use their worst gear and ***** WP rather than make any advances.

- So when I get joined to a half-finished battle on the losing side I get further penalized from leaving it? No thanks. - So if a squad member gets scottied and the squad members want to backout, those squad members get penalized? No thanks. - So if the team is getting proto-stomped because of bad match making, I get penalized from leaving it? No thanks.
I would rather have better matchmaking and less scotty bugs than this. That would do a better job of reducing "deserters". Because be honest, if you're in any of the above situations you're going to leave too.
Besides if a blueberry does leave there's a good chance that a better player will join in. |

How about a bonus when they dc'd by Sony, CCP servers, CCP network solution, the audio provider, their ISP, their router or a bad cable connection? Worse if they rage quit because yet another bug in Dust cost them ISK, tank, LAV, Derp, suit, PRO gear or Officer gear.
Wow, you would be the WP king or some poor sap with a bad internet connection would lose WP every time they played this game.
Dust is game that is supposed to be fun.
Yet the most common topic on the forums of this game is how to punish other players for being better than the QQ Kitten or even worse - for not playing the game that the QQ Kitten wants them to play.
Welcome to Dust - HTFU.
And so it goes.

I like this concept however, I have really bad internet. And in my town bad weather will make it even worse. It causes random DCs (most the time it is in the middle of the match) or my net will shut down completely (running on ADSL Broadband, my country is only now starting to put in FIber Optics). So maybe keep this only for PC and FW where it really counts.

I can see how players dont want collateral dmg, but........... u know what, screw it. I just had a match within hrs of starting this topic where i forged a dropship down and got 4 kills off of it. this made me quite happy. like even if we lose this match "that was the $hi+", bam pwr went out. still want deserter. wait, i got another war story. bout a month ago i got 1st 5 kills(3 headshots) in match within 30 seconds of start sniping(not thale even), and was like " even if we lose that was.....". then bam pwr loss. yet, i still want this. smthin must be wrong with me. im out

deserter penalties a great idea (permanent file should also have desertion % and higher level contracts should be blocked if ur % is too high) but I agree that all of the things the discussed above must be in the game first. |

It's a game, who cares about someone leaving a pub match? Lag, bugs, freezes, d/c, internet, real life, game is crap, match is crap, team is crap, hate the map... you shouldn't be put through unfun bs if you're not in the mood. It's a game not a job.

This. Otherwise, the OP would punish people for a reasonable reaction to CCP's weak matchmaking.

Ah you mean all those sitting in the MCC or retreating into the redline hoping to get one or two sniper kills?
Sorry but no, I normally stay in battle IF my team tries to win even if we are loosing but there is no point in trying if you are the only one... |

I really don't think there is a need for this. There are all sorts of reasons to leave a battle including but not limited to Scotty screwing up and throwing 50% of your squad back to the MQ. Real Life interrupts like a case of power failure, disconnection from the network, wife/husband agro and any other number of things like a kid getting sick upstairs while you are enjoying blowing other people up. I could see this as a possibility if there were a pause button for real life and a game that doesn't mess up 25% of the time when deploying into a match.
