Obviously the main skill is worth it, since it unlocks new Forge Guns and reduces the time it takes for you to charge up a shot. Overall you shave of 25% once maxed out.
The Forge Gun has a low ammo count, so investing into the ammo skill is (in my opinion) definitely worth it. Each level gives you 1 extra round to your total ammo, not clip size. At level 4, that's an entire extra clip before you need to find a Nanohive or Supply Depot.
The reload speed skill is definitely helpful since it gives your target an even smaller window in which to get behind a building or launch a counter-attack.
Proficiency, once you get there, can be a big benefit to you. It only affects damage vs armour (as of 1.8 update) so shields need to drop first for you to get the bonus. Maxed out, that's 15% bonus in addition to the Forge Gun's natural 10% bonus vs armour (25% bonus damage? Hell yeah!) and whatever Damage Mod(s) you might be using.
The only skill I don't consider all that useful is the Optimization skill, since it only lowers PG use and you need to level the Proficiency skill to at least 4 (I think) to unlock it. The SP would be better spent on the Electronics and Engineering skills for the Dropsuit, since those affect your total CPU and PG.

Yeah def max FG op asap. Practice with the assault FG's (once the skill bug is fixed, DAU/2 is ADV lvl) hard to get the hang of since they don't hold a charge but you can have an entire clip done and reloading by the time you would have the 4th shot in a normal one charged. Hard part is learning to anticipate where the enemy vehicles will be in 2 seconds, how fast they're moving and how far away they are so you lead your shot properly. but once you get that down you can **** **** UP! they're fun

All of the skills are worth the SP, I have my forge skills completely maxed except Optimization (which is at level 4, and will stay there untill I need that almighty 1 PG of my Forge fit) If you mean, which skill should you get first? I would highly recommend maxing out your RELOAD SPEED because having a FULL clip at all times is necessary to get some tanks. Especially the ones with stacked ARMOR REPS.
Being a Forge gunner, you will have to stay on the move at all times so I would recommend using some Biotics so you can actually side step vehicles like a Matador, comprende?
Best sidearm for a TRUE AV suit would be the Flaylock. (Can't tell you how many times I have finished off Gunnlogi's and Maddy's who don't put armor reps on their tanks with this beautiful weapon)
Good luck and May the Forge Be With You

- Operation to level 5 first, obviously. - Proficiency is the next most important skill, you should go to 3 as soon as you can. - Ammo is also quite important, go to 2 quickly. - Reload is okay, go to 1. - Fitting is least important. As others have said, it's better to focus on the core engineering skill. MAYBE put one level into fitting if you're 1PG short of making a fit work, don't spend more than that unless you have SP to burn and mostly use FG. |

Obviously you want proficiency, ammo is good to, but with a nanohives its useless when you are up high, and reload imo is just a way for people to feel in powered to shoot moar. But you should always be reloaded before you shoot. Optimization will be a very good skill to get a point or two into after it unlocks.
Also yes, flaylocks are good for finishing tanks, but their use for infantry is impractical and damn near useless against shields.

Once you're through the shields on a sica/gunnlogi you actually have a reasonably large window to damage them. I have been known to kill tanks with a heavy machine gun after hitting them with a few flux grenades. I managed to kill a tank about a week ago with a magsec after someone else blew up a few remotes on it. I believe the flaylock gets its full damage on vehicles, so yeah it does work... it leaves you somewhat defenseless though.
Also the forge gun is *heavily* underestimated in mid-range fights (about 50-70m), if you're good at landing your shots you can kill 2-3 people at a time in the right situations.
