You know that mechanic where when you get shot it seems like you're stuck in sludge? You know which weapons it benefits the most? Well lets break it down, the more you get shot the more you get/stay slowed down. So it should be painfully obvious that weapons with high ROF like the Combat Rifle, HMG, and SMG, benefit most from this mechanic. The AR does more DPS than the ACR, but because of the sludge mechanic the ACR has better applied DPS. Since that was CCPs great fix to "hit detection," all hail the greatness of CCP.

Based on my math the ACR has more DPS than the AR...
ACR (BK42) Damage 20; RoF 1200 => DPS:400 AR (GEK38) Damage 31,5; RoF 750 =>DPS:~393
The difference get even greater thanks to the better damage profile now throw in more range...and you get the reason the CR/ACR is so popular |

I'll have to get in game later and check, I'm basing the numbers off math I did a couple weeks ago and figured out the AR had more DPS than the ACR so thought I would give it a go again. The numbers may have changed after the last round of nerfs to rifle damage.
But lets say your numbers are right, they're only 7 DPS off from each other. So why does the ACR shred people so much easier than the AR? The sludge effect. The AR has 62.5% the ROF of the ACR, and therefore has a similarly percentage based chance of the shots hitting comparatively.

Also, the inexplicable Damage Profile that Projectile weapons get for absolutely no reason whatsoever. This adds an effective 10 DPS/+2.5% Damage to Combat Rifles. Not much but its still without reason. Their Damage Profile should be adjusted to -5/+5.
Along with the Fact that ACRs actually just do have more DPS than ARs, for no reason at all. This is more of a problem of ARs being relatively underwhelming compared to the other full-auto rifles. Than anything though.
So, even without the "sludge" effect, Combat Rifles/Projectile Weapons would be quite OP, and removing that still wouldn't balance them.

I'm really tired of seeing people talk about the unnecessary damage profile the CR has for "no reason." It's Minmatar tech, that's the reason. Everything Minmatar has is made to be versatile, which is why the damage profile is the way it is. Now the CR having more DPS than say the AR, that is something that should not be. But to say the damage profile is "OP" and makes no sense, is simply just asinine.
Every weapon is supposed to have their little niche, and the CR's primary niche is versatility in damage. The AR is supposed to have supreme face raping DPS, the ScR is supposed to have good damage with good range, and the RR is supposed to have godly range with decent damage.

-5/+5 is still versatile. More versatile than any other weapons at least.

True, that could be reasonable. But we should really strive to take more babysteps to try to balance the game. The super nerfs and super buffs have made the game worse build after build. We should get rid of the sludge and add some DPS to the AR first and see how things play out. Cause I finally was able to get in game, and the AR's DPS is in fact inferior to the ACR. Which is simply wrong, plain and simple. That just simply should not be a fact of this game.
Now correct me if I'm wrong also, but haven't the SMG and HMG always had this damage profile? And neither of them have been cited as "OP" due to simply damage profile.

Nothing will help the AR.
CCP/Shanghai needs you to spend SP. So every new weapon will be better than the AR. Any overall weapon Nerf Hammer will also ding the AR so no matter what, the AR will continue to be negatively effected by all actions from CCP/Shanghai.
Instead of Nerf Hammering the AR they can add weapons and increase the number of options for game play. What they do instead is force Mercs to the new weapon because of their dedication to their planned FOTM. Or because they are clueless. Your choice.
Welcome to Dust, where your best weapon will get Nerf Hammered. Don't forget to buy your AUR booster!
And so it goes.

The main reason the combat rifle(CR) out preforms the assault rifle(AR) is the fact that the CR is good against armour whereas the AR is good against shield. Think about it most of the player base tank armour I hardly ever see a shield tanked suit; (exempt Caldari scouts) so with this truth shed a light if most of the player base used shield tanked suits the AR would out preform the CR. Sad though true right right? htfu?

No, it effects all weapons prettymuch the same, only the HMG has enough ROF to be considerably more noticed.
The ACR damage profile is broken (Projectile +10% Armour -5% Shields) nneds to be changed to match explosive. (Explosive +20% Armour -20% Shields) Otherwise 6 DPS is negligible and you loose a lot more if mkss a single shot which is very easy to do at such a high ROF.
The standard combat rifle needs to be given a hard cap on fire rate 4 3-round bursts a second limits it to 323 DP, exactly where it should be.
Unless your a Computer Scientist don't tell me how Game Mechanics Work.

So your argument is to buff shields to make them more viable to the average Dust Merc? I could get behind that, honestly if only to see more versatility out there.

This is evident from their actions. The AR got the most QQ on the forums until ~1.6. Then they finally got Nerf Hammered far enough down into the Dust that the next big thing became the target - CR/RR. Which got Nerf Hammered but not nearly to the level that the AR has continually been chipped away at.
And so it goes.
