This was confirmed by CCP to be an animation optimization. Essentially, you can't hear anything behind you - be it footsteps, gunfire, etc. You can hear the rounds bashing into the back of your skull but you won't hear anything besides that; which means that anything from a Sentinel with a pair of nova knives to a cloaked scout with a sniper rifle can sneak up behind you and you would never hear them coming.
To me, this is just irritating and it needed to be redone a long time ago. I don't mind a skilled scout landing kills for getting close to me but no-one likes predator kills, something I've kept my mouth shut about since Uprising 1.8 was deployed as to get accustomed to just how bad it was.
This has nothing to do with cloaking, don't make that mistake - this is about being deaf toward anything that isn't on the screen at the time. It's annoying.

if they fix it we need to add acoustic dampening and amplification modules for soundwhoring. Which I'm all for.

I love how this stuff turns up as an 'optimization' because the map/facility team cannot put out something that doesnt have memory leaks everywhere.
Cant have more than 32 players because of memory - other games have had way more Cant have more complex maps/installations because of memory - other game have had much larger and more complex Cant have sound behind you because of memory - lulz
Im not going to say the 'game that shall not be named' but come on. We all know that its sad that a game that was put out over 4 years ago can trump Dust in some of the most basic categories. Its ish like this that continues to make me think that nobody associated with the development team has every played a FPS before.

Sure, I'd be down for it. At least then I'd know that ole boy is taking a hit to his survivability in order to get the ace on me all predator style. Right now it's just infuriating knowing that someone snuck up on me because I wasn't conveniently aiming in his general direction to hear him sprinting across the gravel.

Was really hoping it'd be eliminated in 1.8 but those hopes were dashed. But, knowing our luck, someone is going to get the bright idea to nerf shotguns or remove cloaking for balancing reasons before they ever touch up on this - even though I remain fully 100% convinced it would solve a lot of the problems with the predator killing.

I often (read: always) play while listening to music / watching TV. I agree it's a poor showing of optimization, but I could not care less. I'll use sound obsessively in CS and similar games (A.V.A.), but in Dust I just don't care enough to bother with sounding. IMO this is a fine thing for them to cut in the name of frame rate.

I specifically bought a stereo headset for 'that game that shall not be named' so I could hear someone coming up behind me for a knife kill. It adds a lot to the game and that adrenaline rush of "oh ish, someone is behind me"

Would make too much sense in this game, bro. S'like not having enter/exit animations on the vehicles so LAV Heavies turned into a thing.

It adds a lot to the game and that adrenaline rush of "oh ish, someone is behind me" My mind was blown the first time I used a gaming headset, opposed to TV speakers and a little phone Bluetooth headset for communication. Huge drivers right next to your ears, at whatever volume you want, plus the ability to adjust the chat volume. That was wired.
Now I use the official Sony headset, and it's wireless. I can go to the bathroom (while muted) still listening to what's going on.
I may be missing something, but I'm pretty sure that I didn't call for a tank nerf before Uprising 1.7. - Atiim

The game 'that shall not be named' was one of the very best FPS of all time. I can imagine Activision and EA waking up every morning to start dancing and laughing because 'the shall not be named' game had idiots on the marketing team ('company that shall not be named').

Lol, I play with all sounds muted, partly because I'm use to things being quiet but mostly due to the fact that my nieces live with me and the only times I get to play are when they are asleep.
Aside from not hearing anything, I have to admit that my situational awareness is almost unrivaled. My need to constantly check my surroundings or pull a quick 180s have made me a paranoid, yet semi-skillful player. |

It sucks but, now you know what real combat would be like if you had blasts and gunfire. You'd be deaf with ringing in your ears or, you'd have earplugs which is just as bad.
That moment in the original DUST trailer where the char is taking a hit and the sound fades off? Yeah, that would be all the time.
I never got into real combat but training for it with real ammo was bad enough knowing that you couldn't hear a damn thing and there were bullets whizzing near your head.
I usually play with the sound low due to when I play so fixing this issue wouldn't help me at the moment.
Lol, the ban hammer got me!

Sure, but that is kinda nyxxed by the fact we're wearing vacuum sealed helmets which probably have volume equalization like you have on your television.
