I'm new to faction warfare and noticed after a few matches that when I lost a match my standings level with that faction dropped. I was at standing level 2 with Gallente and now after a loss it is back to level 1.
I only fight for Gallente.
I read this dev blog about FW before I started and unless I'm overlooking something it says nothing about this.

Is this other players experience as well?
If so, why would I finish a match that is going to be a loss? Why doesn't everyone on the obvious losing side quit the battle?
Granted, please excuse the fact that I am new to this. Any constructive input is appreciated.

Team killing? That makes you lose standings. Losses don't affect anything in regards to your standing (or shouldn't, anyways).
I have standings for Gallente at 5 and I don't even lose standings when I accidently TK, lose, or even get a win for Caldari (but not enough wins to earn standings 1). |

If you're going by the points shown at the End Of Match screen, it's still wonky some time.
Your true standing level will always be shown on your Character Stats page.
Beyond that, you should probably know this about FW:
Winning gets you +75 toward the side you fought for. That's obvious enough.
Winning also is -15 standing toward the side you fought against. (So it takes 5 matches to erase one victory for the other team.)
Losing gains you no points, but it also loses no points from empire faction that stomped you. So you can sabotage a faction by playing like a complete noob blueberry to no consequence whatsoever.
Teamkilling or Forge Gunning blue vehicles will get you kicked though. It's -450 points for each kick, which is a hell of a punishment IMO. It takes 6 victories to make up for one kick, which can take an eternity if you play for CaldariGǪ
TL;DR
Ignore post-game results.
Check your character page.
+75 to your team for a win, -15 against other faction for a win.
+0/-0 for a loss.
-450 for being a douchebag or being careless.

Thank you. I checked my character sheet and it reflects level 2. The end of match sheet is confusing as it showed I had dropped to Level 1. Appreciate the help.

Or if they hack a tank from your team, then you get kicked for shooting a red tank. |
