i still remember it. I used to like looking at the planets and the stars they orbit. Especially looking at the background for every region. I miss it, the reason why they removed it was because it had no purpose.

The old star map was the same (or mostly similary to) EVE Online's star map.
I wish it still existed as an option in the game, honestly. If only for flavor and immersion. Pretty please, see see pee?

As Disturbingly Bored stated, the old star map was the same one used in EVE. I assume CCP removed it due to it being too complex for console players, and the fact that at that time it served no true purpose.
I hope to see it return someday.

That was the actual EVE map. They just ported it over to DUST as it was in EVE... The idea being that eventually if they allowed DUST players to travel and use the EVE markets then it would become useful. But CCP has yet to institute the two of the CORE THINGS this game needs in order for it to be finished:

Without those TWO VERY IMPORTANT FEATURES put into this game, then it is no longer a 'sandbox' ... There cannot be any "emergent gaming." And DUST becomes nothing other than a very frustrating to use, kinda different style of first person shooter.
Seriously CCP, get back to the origins of what this game was supposed to be about! You have been side-tracked by all your lame re-balancing measures and other fixes that you've focused on the minute details and lost track of the big picture!!!!

The Amarr Templar BPO has mostly made up for it, though.
