Cloaking is very interesting sci-fi device and has been implemented the first time around very well. It could have gone very badly. The fact that it is effective at surprising solo players does wonders for bringing this into a more squad based game.
If you are getting killed by scouts, pick a random blue berry and follow them around. It will make cloaks easier to deal with. There are many tell tale signs that you will be assaulted by a cloaker. In other games, you get none. In DUST you get:
- Limited cloaking time
- Passive scan precision
- Active scan precision
- A noticeable outline while moving (other games blend in a lot, the color choice in DUST really stands out among-st the other color palettes)
- Target reticle lights up red when looking at the cloaker
- The shimmer is noticeable by trained eye (other games they are completely invisible when not moving)
- Other than that, you just learn when and where they are likely to show up
Cloaking teaches people to watch their corners and cover their teammates as they move around. One guy can't do it all. It also teaches people to slow down and pay attention to the environment they are about to rush in to. Clone or not, if you never make it to the hack point, you are still losing the war. |

And other things couldn't do this? The cloak is a convenient fix to stuff CCP can't (and now probably never will) develop.
The cloak doesn't have to be as great as it is now, nor does it have to be the tool to force squad cooperation.
Also, when something gets spammed and becomes the default mode to gain advantage it is not balanced.
Brick tanking a scout suit since April 2013!

It is the new toy to play with. Everyone is fitting it because it is one of the super few updates in the way of completely new things. There was no base item added to the game other than cloak. Later when team force fields get added, if they are the only thing added in that patch, it will seem OP too. Cloak in this game is not OP and the base mechanics on the first go around are really good. As with all things in MMOs, tweaks will never stop. All things considered though, it was a solid addition to the game in its current state. |
