Currently in a frantic game its not too uncommon to confuse friend from foe when either is cloaked.
Now you may think "so what?" well in a public match I admit it's usually not an issue as their is no friendly fire. Well what about if two scouts are about to face off, they both start declaoking and you only have a split second to help one of them out? well it could well mean the difference from helping a team mate or just making the situation worse.
But yes, the main focus of this is FW and PC where friendly fire is active. Your moving through the building. Your not relying so much on the minimap as its useless vs light frames. An ally runs in the opposite direction while cloaked and bang! you've just teamkilled a frendly. I'm not ashamed to say that I've nearly done that on several occasions. Luckily up until now I haven't actually killed anyone but it has been damned close. And I know more than a few that have actually had this happen.
What I propose is a different coloured shimmer for allies that is far more distinct. The opposite colour would be red but thats counter to them being allies. perhaps green? Or make the shimmer far more noticeable?
I was going to say we don't even need them to be invisible at all if they're allies but then I realised you could accidentally give them away to watching enemies if you interacted with them / rep them
Your thoughts?

Great idea. If CCP were to make enemy shimmer red, we could keep the current blue for allies, though it needs to be visible at all times for them. If I were going to choose another color, though, it'd be a bright gold/yellow. Alternatively, maybe make cloaked friendlies semi-transparent like the Ring of Fog from Dark Souls. |

God yes, this needs to happen... the sheer amount of times I nearly killed a cloaked ally during a FW match with my HMG out of panic shots is through the roof.

allied cloaked units show up on the tacnet (minimap) and have a blue allied arrow floating above their heads at all times like any other allied unit. what more could you ask for?
and blue shimmer is obvious enough. i can only imagine how visable red shimmer would be
if you friendly kill scouts, thats your own fault. you need to be more aware of your surroundings and your minimap.
so no.

Just to clarify and reply

As I said, the focus now ingame is not to work off the tacnet, since there are so many cloaked units on the field. Those that do usually end up dead as they don't see the distortion in front of them. And as I said in my example, moving through dense terrain where a lurking shotgunner may easily get the drop on you requires you to focus more on your direct field of view to catch them out at the earliest opportunity. As to the blue arrow over the blue shimmering ally its not very distinct, at least not in the heat of the moment. It kinda gets lost in the field and takes a moment to notice.

We can't make the enemy cloak field red as its a 'spot' colour - our eyes and brain are pre programmed to see that colour very easily (as a danger indicator). It has to remain blue as its a natural background colour (like our atmosphere - all objects get 'more blue' the greater the distance from the observer).
I like the idea of a Gold/Yellow shimmer though. That might work well.

still, if it shows up as blue on an ally, why would it show up as a different color if they are an enemy? i mean lore-wise.
taking the chance of being friendly killed whiled cloaked is just another thing that helps balance the scout, or at least the cloak (to those who say scouts arent balanced, which i strongly disagree with in geneal. i say its the brick tanking scouts).

I don't want to change the colour of the enemies shimmer. Just the allies.

Good luck with this one..
As a sniper, i see a lot of movement, and waste a lot of time focusing in on areas of the map I don't even need to be looking at.
From a distance chevrons do not display readily, and as it's been named even in Dust 514..
FOG OF WAR is certainly turned ON.
I've had to deal with this for some time now.. fun isn't it. Wasting time, and being useless during that time.

I think a blue outline for cloaked friendlies as a HUD feature would be better than a blue shimmer. |
