Just thought I would share this. These guys do great videos about the gaming industry and more. I am sure most of you have seen a lot of these videos. For those of you who haven't and are avid gamers. These videos are something you might find interesting.

Oddly enough their F2P touches a few irritating spots for me regarding Dust. Gaming the system to see how to beat those that pay for items (AUR tanks for example). That and I cannot even begin to count the number of times I have heard Mercs ask for skins, paint or such. Even if it was limited to the war barge suit.
There is nothing in Dust I want to give them money for. Maybe CCP/Shanghai should watch a video or two.
A great series overall. I have been watching it since the beginning and they have covered many things about design and the business of game studios.
And so it goes.

Well, done right but not completely right. I'm with those who would pay money for vanity items and such.

Considering that the only place where avatars are displayed are in the Warbardge, I don't see a huge market for them. However, I know that there are tons of people who are interested in vanity items if the cost was appropriate.
As for vehicle skins, although awesome they do effect rendering and could hinder the frame rate. Doesn't mean I wouldn't love to see a "Hello Kitty" tank dropping mercs.
Vanity items are only one aspect to micro transactions. I felt BPOs were a great purchase through AUR. I wish I could have picked up all the BPOs myself. BPOs also were great for new players. Concidering it redused the cost of cheap fit suits and allowed for a better isk efficiency overall. Bring them back could help new players enter the unforgiving environment of our game with a bit more ease.

CCPs model of disposable AUR items really isn't working. the game is so broke no one relaly wants to throw real money away being tank spammed.
generally is F2P you use cash to get something that will benefit you but not lead you to pay to win. we have passive and active boosters ect and in the old days BPOs CCP claim BPOs ruin dusts economy which is generally BS. it doesn't have an economy yet. we buy stuff with npc generated isk from an npc generated market which we can't even sell back to.
me and friends had ideas of either re-introducing BPO packs back in various 'vanity' colours. themes liek State Protectorate or Federal Defense Union. basically its the Elite pack of old slightly changed.
Sentinel, Scout, Assault, Logi of the peticular race in the chosen colours. then the same with racial weapons.
caldari - rail rifle, sniper rifle, swarm launcher, magsec gallente - AR, Shotgun, Ion Pistol, Plasma cannon minmatar - combat rifle, SMG, Mass Driver, flaylock amarr - laser rifle, scram rifle, scram pistol (any new AV introduced in next builds)
throw in the 2 x active 2 x pasive 30 day booster and playerbase would be more liekly to spend the $80-$100 on this than they would $20 on disposable AUR suits
if CCP want to be stubborn about BPO removal then utilize the new system they have in EVE where you buy a 'BPO' skin.
this way you buy a bunch of suits say 500 gallente Assault G-1 hit triangle and 'apply' Alliastra colourings, they then become standalone items so you can buy 500 more and 'apply' Quafe skin ect, ect
sell these permanent 'skin' bpos for $5-$10 each and the show offs amongst us can be happy, sweeten the pot that 'skinned' suits get a 10% bonus to shield or armour HP :)

But you and I know why they were removed and it was for good reason. The AUR BPOs are not something to be seeded any further if we are to ever see a full-fledged economy in Dust which will also include industry and AUR BPOs threaten that industry.

Extra Credits has League of Legends **** so far down their mouth its coming out in their stomach. Dust and Guild wars are *great* examples of F2P games, they are not amazing examples of F2P cash cows, though with a few changes I can easily see dust becoming considerably more popular (a much better npe, and pc/ps4 compatibility are all it really needs, aside from a bit of balancing, but by the time we get all the balancing out of the way we might just have ps4/pc support). |

NOT 50 skins that go away after I die....don't get any ideas ccp

The the most relevant point to Dust made in the video is how to make spending money enjoyable. Right now all we have are bundle packs that are essentially just goody bags of the same stuff we can normally buy.
It's plainly obvious to everyone that cosmetic customisation is the way to go for monetisation in F2P. Yet Dust is still going the route warned against in the video.

The hilarity of CCP offering BPO's right off the bat should have been a warning sign for me. It's a math formula that just doesn't add up.
Foundation: all items are consumable and die with you Monetization: spend USD for either early access single use copies or faster access to SP for ISK copies Expectation: game will be based on trading currencies and items in a scarcity-driven, conflict filled environment
Add all those up, and the result is that they should add unlimited versions of items for USD and kill scarcity? I know many, many players called it out and in a post Incarna world, just mind boggling that it happened.
Now, they are stuck with this dumb decision. They can't power creep past BPO's because it shows that money spent can be nerfed to worthlessness. They could take em away and hand out cash shop currency but that means a lot of angry red ink for balance books. If CCP prevents them from being traded, then those who planned for the long haul (and are invested into the game) get shafted. Leaving the BPO's as is and freely trade-able will undermine the economy and separate players into the haves of higher efficiency of isk farming in standard BPO's vrs. militia free fits
How they get themselves out of this jam without creating a negative experience for veteran players is likely to be a case study in F2P gaming. I can't wait to see which direction they go with BPO's. I'm also completely baffled at how little CCP cares about ISK printing going completely off the rails via molden heath and character recycling. This free isk printing makes the BPO issue irrelevant if they never stop or adjust it. |

I think Dust's model would have been great if BPO's never existed, district locking was unprofitable and character recycling was never worth your time.
I can't wait to never buy AUR again and spend all my billions of character recycling isk on boosters for as many alts as I feel. That money already got me a templar set! Thanks, rushed game design! |
