I just created another character and plan on going the "heavy" route with him. I've been looking over the Dust Wiki and am trying to decide between Sentinel and Commando. I know the Sentinel has more defenses, more PG and CPU, and a higher shield recharge rate. They also have more module slots across the board other than light weapons and also get grenades plus a sidearm.
However, on the flipside, the Commando has a higher rate of speed and higher melee damage (which I'm starting to realize comes in REALLY handy getting up close and personal.
Looking at everything, I guess what I'm trying to figure out is what they benefit of going Commando over Sentinel would be. It seems Sentinels just get more of everything (other than speed). However, I see A LOT of people who are all out cookoo for Commando.
I'd appreciate any information you can give me on this. I'll probably be ready to buy the skillbook in the next couple of days so it's not urgent, just kind of wondering. |

I would say go Sentinel, HMG is fun. If you go with either though you can try out the other for just 47K.
Because, that's why.

The Sentinel seems more appealing to me as well. The idea of running an HMG and just mowing people down gets the hair on my neck standing. And I just checked that page and realized the Commando is showing a Light weapon while the Sentinel is showing a Heavy weapon. Yeah, I think I'm decided. |

The problem with the abundance of commandos right now is the current event, so everyone is running one to get the bonus skill points.
A commando has damage increase to a specific type of weapon depending of which race you pick. So that, and the two light weapons, can maximize that damage bonus enough to give you the reason to consider it over the sentinel.
Personally, I like the commando, and find that I run either a closer/longer range weapon combo or a average/av. So, a scrambler/lazor is an Amarr choice since both are heat buildup weapons and Caldari would be the rail/sniper for the railgun damage. I like the commando mostly for it's tank though, and not sacrificing one weapon over another.
When you proto one, it's comparable to every other proto suit, only it has no grenade and a second light weapon, so it really lends stength to the more specialized roles....
...like AV and snipers. It's also for those that HATE all the sidearms but still want a fall back gun. And for those that like using two variants of the same weapon. |

The benefit of going Commando is the feeling of pure, unadulterated freedom.
The benefit of skilling into Commando in Dust is pure, unadulterated fun!
In all seriousness, skill into both and give them a test run. You're only out like 40k SP to test the waters.
If you win the rat race, you're still a rat.

a commando puts out extraordinary fire a sentinel does the same but not as versatile of weapons, both need support imo, the sentinel can take more damage,,

I personally went commando because speccing into the commando gives you access to something that the basic frame can't do.
If I feel like running an HMG I just use a basic frame. Sure it doesn't have the extra defense bonuses, but that's never really caused me that big of a problem.
Stop at lvl one commando for a while just to make sure you enjoy it enough to forgo the defense bonus, though.
If you do decide to go commando I'd suggest also getting lvl 2 of both uplinks and nanohives so you can use the compact hive and stable drop uplink.
The compact hive is perfect for quick healing because commandos generally have a hard time bouncing back from damage on their own.
The stable uplinks are great for stuffing them onto a suit without sacrificing any of your defenses. Being able to drop an uplink and camp on it with a heavy is really handy for giving your team a foothold near an objective.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I think I'm going to go the basic route and level 1 on both just to test the waters. If nothing else, having both will allow me to diversify myself on the battlefield and change fittings as the situation presents itself. |

HMG Sentinel is great for locking down an objective point. Especially ones inside buildings or confined spaces. Swap the HMG for a Forge and you have the most reliable (and only remain, truly effective) man-portable AV weapon going. Go with Sentinel if you want to be able to weather the storm of fire, mowing down enemies with the weapon of choice like a Juggernaut. High EHP and resistances to certain weapons means than the right fitting can take a Remote Explosive, Rail Gun or Forge Gun and keep going.
Commando has the benefit of two Light Weapons and both a damage and reload bonus, depending on suit and weapon. Two Light Weapons means that a Sniper won't be out-gunned by a Scout while moving to a new firing position. Swarm users, those brave fools, can use something akin to the pre-nerf Swarm while having a ranged weapon for backup. An AR Commando can have a pocket Shotgun for those Scouts who get too close.Commando works better if you want more tactical flexibility, are heavily invested in Light Weapons, want to use equipment and need more EHP than an Assault can provide.
Both can function alone but do so much better with support.

Commandos give you more damage and more weapon versatility.
The extra damage isn't just in the racial bonus; its also from damage mods because unlike all the other suits, the dmg mod increases dmg on both your weapons because both your weapons are light ones.
For weapon versatility, two light weapons lets you pick better weapon compliments. I've speced into the min commando and am considering specing into the amar commando in the distant future because I love the laser rifle. My weapon combos to date on my min commando:
Laser Rifle/Mass Driver - two area of denial weapons: one that destroys sheilds, one that destroys armor. Use the laser rifle to make people go into cover with shields wiped out and then kill them in cover with the MD's splash damage. Minus of this fit is that I only get the dmg bonus on the MD. Another disadvantage is you really have nothing to use effectively against close range targets. If ran with squads, this would be a great fit because my team mates could protect me from close quarter combatants. I run solo most of the time, so I use the faster speed to keep my distance, but still die a lot.
Mass Driver/Combat Rifle - Area of denial and short-medium range combat. Before the min commando, i would run an assault fit with an MD and SMG, which was actually a good combo. The advantage of this fit over my old one is the dmg bonus to both weapons and the reload bonus is awesome on a slow loading weapon like the MD.
Swarm Launcher/Combat Rifle - An awesome AV fit. The SL was a difficult weapon to run before commando suits because all you had to take on infantry was a sidearm. I sometimes would switch to an AV fit to find that all the vehicles were no longer on the field or would push a tank/dropship out of combat over and over again with lulls in between while the tank/dropship recharged/repaired, meaning I was not helping my team much unless the game play was close quartered enough for my SMG. Now I can still use the combat rifle to take down infantry. The dmg bonus also applies to both weapons AND the reload bonus is sick on the swarm launcher. When I am eventually lvl 5 on this suit type (probably not for a long while since I am going to level back into my beloved min logi suit), the 4 second reload on the swarm launcher will be 3 seconds. If you go to lvl 5 on reload speed on the actual SL tree, combined the reload speed would be around 2.5 seconds. That is an amazing improvement that might allow you to sometimes still get a fourth volley off on a retreating tank or dropship that might take it down or at least keep it out of play for longer. |

So, it's been about 5 days of running with both (just specced into Caldari level 1 with each). I am noticing myself running almost exclusively commando because of that versatility. I'm level 5 for Combat Rifle so I run that and pair it with 1: Charged Sniper & 2: Shotgun (militia). I love both of the combo's. I also get an equipment slot on top of it. I'm really starting to see what everyone is talking about with the versatility. I will admit I LOVE the Sentinel's defenses but until I get my Heavy weapons to the point I can run HMG, there is really no reason. |
