Often, players get thrown from the Battle Academy into the "real world" and are left worse than they came in due to the hardiness and rigor required. The big issue in all of this is their adjustment from point a, the academy, to point b, the field. What we should be doing is extending the academy to be based on SP while also allowing players to venture outside of the academy.
It's a much more complex system, although not too complex, that I thought of that should do the trick. Essentially, all new players must get a certain amount of SP, let's say 5 million SP, but the battle academy doesn't reward the players with much SP per game. Instead, to get their 5 million SP as quickly as possible, they would need to play public matches.
This makes the academy matches a cushion for actual practicing instead of simple one match learning system for Dust. In the end this is better than the current system because while also giving players a considerable cushion area in the form of having contracts that can only be accepted by their academic peers, it also allows for them to take the initiative to adjust.
The only issue here is the possibility for the Academy to become empty if not enough of the players play in it but right now, that's the same issue as the current system except the system I'm suggesting would allow for players to have an extended use of the academy, thus making it far less likely the academy will be empty.
If there's ever a real need for an incentive for people to play in the academy, other than having a safer learning environment, just make it so that if you play a certain amount of matches by the end of your days at the academy, you get a reward of ISK.
I believe completely that this system will better the game and help players become better as well. While having a "training area" in the academy, they can also venture out to the real game and participate with the others as well as network and learn more about the game. And if it ever gets too tough, they can go back to the academy.
