My brother and I are arguing over which one would beat the other. There are a lot of advantages to the Rail Rifle such as range, total damage, and weight/speed. The down fall of it, is its penalty, the charge up time. The advantage of the machine gun is its rate of fire. Its reload time and low total damage make its disadvantages. The advantages and disadvantages of each gun is compared to each other in this post. Choose a side.
After every 50 posts I will count up the total. (My vote doesnt count but I choose Rail Rifle)

suggesting this will reach 50... it's obviously Rail Rifle, because it's the most preferred weapon used in-game. (Although I use Scrambler)

HMG, Your not gonna get range on me because I always use AV to get up close. Also, if I'm using an HMG that means I'm using my heavy, which has more HP then you do c;

Also how the hell am I going to choose a side over a mindless debate?
Its not that mindless, I just got tired of him saying that machine gun is better. And this is to prove him wrong (Even though I dont need to because he sucks *** in the game).

This.
Though, random fact for you folks - rail rifles count for almost 40% of light weapon purchases.
You have long since made your choice. What you make now is a mistake.

I vote for Railgun.
That's totally the best of both worlds.
More seriously though, Rail Rifle would be my preference over HMG, because it's less of a situational weapon. |

As stated above: you are comparing two weapons that are quite different. The HMG can only be used on a Sentinel-type Heavy which are slow moving. Rail Rifle has a much better range and can be used by any suit meaning you can flank the enemy easier, move faster than a snail, and not glow in the dark on radar.
But I will humor you: Assuming pointblank range, both weapons press the trigger at the same time and fire for 3 seconds. HMG: Rate of Fire is 2,400 RPM / 20 for 3 seconds = 120 bullets x 18 = 2,160 damage. DPS is 720. Rail Rifle: Charge is .3 seconds so it is only shooting for 2.7 seconds. Rate of Fire is 451.54 / 60 * 2.7 = 20.3 bullets x 47 = 954.1 damage. DPS, not counting charge time, is 361.54
What does this mean? Nothing other than the obvious: A Heavy Machine Gun is a close range weapon and meant to be used at close range. It melts things but can't reach out and touch someone. The Rail Rifle can. Comparing the HMG to a Rail Rifle is like asking "is a Sniper Rifle or a Shotgun better?" They have completely different limitations and are meant for completely different play styles.
For what it is worth: People complain about Rail Rifle Sentinel more than they complain about HMG Sentinel.

Same suits at medium range? It would have to be either a heavy frame or a sentinel as they are the only ones that allow an HMG. Also we need to pick which suit. Would it be a shield tanking caldari? Or a not-so-speed-tanking Minmatar? Or will it be a bricked out Gallente or Amarr? Only reason I ask is because weapons do different damage against shields and armours depending on their weapon type (Hybrid - Rail, Hybrid - Blaster, Projectile, Laser). So we might end up giving the advantage to one weapon or another just by the suit we choose.
Also we need to look at their weapon proficiency, overall player skill, the variant of RR and HMG used, the mods each person is using...
The list just goes on and on. So I will give you a simple answer to your question: Weapon's are only as good as the people who wield them.

What's medium range?
If it is within 30 meters, the optimal of the HMG, the HMG wins. It is easy. It does more DPS but has a terrible range. If you mean something like 55 meters, outside the Effective Range of the HMG meaning it's damage is going to be terrible and the spray insane but within the optimal of the Rail Rifle, the Rail Rifle wins easy.
If you care for a closer analogy than the one I made above: "Which would win: a Laser Rifle or an Assault Rifle?" The 'answer' is the same as above: "What range? Laser Rifle does little damage from 1-50 meters and the Assault Rifle wants to be within 1-41 meters."
Close Range: Heavy Machine Gun Past about 35 meters: Rail Rifle

Why don't you grab the two and find out? I've been in plenty of battles on the ends of both weapons. It all comes down to positioning. If you have the range, Rail Rifle. If you don't, HMG. If you're good bunny hopper, perhaps rail rifle. This isn't a game where there are hard caps to who wins or who loses. HMG definitely has the most damage potential, but rail rifle is very flexible.
I don't vote for either, sorry if I'm not being helpful.

Assuming this ''duel'' would start at a range BOTH players can use their weapons at (close) and assuming BOTH players are HEAVIES to share the same HP, The HMG will win at this correct distance.
