Why does everything sound so lame?
An 80GJ cannon shot near me.
Expectation: Extremely loud noise that would, for a moment, be the loudest thing on the battlefield among gunfire and explosions. Reality: A fart
And it's true in general for everything in DUST.
Go into battlefield and it's like an eargasm of battle sounds. A tank firing near you is LOUD, and you can hear it across the map.
My intentions is to have a fun game for everyone.
If I seem to be biased, I have good hard data to back it up.

Why do people always feel the need to defend this **** game like they made it themselves or something? The sound effects DO suck. The shotgun sounds like a dodgeball bouncing off a hardwood floor. lol
I spent half my ISK on gambling, alcohol and wild women. The rest I wasted.

Of all the shooting games I have ever played - the sounds in Dust are the least impressive. Also, it's the only game I have ever played where I actually have to mute my TV because the sound of my gun is so irritating (Charge Sniper Rifle).
And why does the Combat Rifle have a high-pitched "pew pew" like a laser gun? It fires bullets. This really bugs me xD |

I just got BF4 on pc and for all of its own problems, its a total joy to play compared to DUST.
You know the worse thing though? DUST 514 has the potential and could well be much better than Battlefield 4. However I cannot play a game when things such as skills are not even being taken into account for minutes into the game.
Hey at least I dont have to worry about 'Fatal Errors' either.
I hope CCP will sort out DUST as its a game with crazy amounts of potential, for that to happen though CCP AT LEAST has to fix the bugs that they brought in with 1.8. (Let alone older bugs!) |

Sounds design definitely leaves much to be desired but it isn't a huge deal. This game does have some awesomely satisfying sounds though, even if they are not loud and powerful. My favorite gun in the game, despite not using it much, is the Forge Gun. The sounds it makes are oh-so pleasing.

Go into battlefield and it's like an eargasm of battle sounds. A tank firing near you is LOUD, and you can hear it across the map.
That's because the coding for sounds in this game is f*cked up. the real culprit of the lag in PC matches and other larger sized battles was not the fancy video graphics, but the abuse of the sound in the game. The more loud and all encompassing sounds in the game, the more the PS3 gets confused as to what sounds to play. If you have HUGE sounds like you suggest that should cover larger sections of the battlefield, then that creates more likelihood for "overlapping sounds." It's when you get something like 30+ overlapping sounds that the game becomes unplayable. This is why "equipment spamming" was so hard on the lag. Combine a dozen equipment items in one area with overlapping dropship and tank noises and you get the picture. That's why for a long time after beta the vehicle noises were having all kinds of issues.
CCP just needs to find a way to prioritize the noises such that only the loudest 5 or 10 or whatever the magic number is are set to play. Unfortunately, this could cause other problems with noises not being heard when they should be. Programming for sound has always been a difficult task in the gaming world.

Actually,
I disagree completely with the OP. Weapon sounds is one thing CCP got right. Due to the distinct sounds for all weapons, it's easy to identify them by sound which is very useful.

Having it replicate how it might sound IRL would not work well. It would turn into cacophony real fast.

Battlefield has every sound in the game real world recorded...
You Fight in water with a knife versus someone? Yea they recorded two Navy seals having a sparring session in the pool with training knifes.
You hear an engine? Yup real world recorded... Every gun? Yup they went to the firing range and personally fired every gun and recorded the sounds.
You come to DUST? and everything is fake re-used sounds off their MIDI board.
There is no real world recording then Tweaking the sound to make it more futuristic.
Even worse are the Audio balancing and performance in the game..
Almost any Audiophile could of done a better job with a 600 dollar sound board....
It's an interesting place to cheap out... And get's called out on EVERY game review DUST 514 gets.
http://www.gamespot.com/reviews/dust-514-review/1900-6415604/ wrote:[The gameplay's more tangible issues are too numerous to recount in full. Battlegrounds are too large for the player count, resulting in long stretches where enemies are nowhere to be found. They're wastelands of muddy industrial sameness, with no attention to scale or flow. Paths dead-end nonsensically. Ladders and hallways lead to empty rooms devoid of relation to objectives or tactics. Weapon types are tremendously imbalanced. Audio effects sound cheap and have little relevance to the direction or proximity of their source. Dips in the frame rate result in distant enemies frequently looking like they're moving in stop-motion. The list goes on |
