I think a bow would be a cool medium ranged silent weapon. Not a crossbow like COD:p, but a futuristic recurve or compound bow. With bullet drop so I takes skill to use at range. Maybe bonus dmg for headshots. |

Okay, let's put this a simpler way: the armor on a scout can effectively stop more kinetic/thermal energy than current armored vehicles(Read the lore tidbits on the armor and weapons and just what amount of damage they do). How is a bow that can't even pierce infantry armor today going to do anything but plink off harmlessly?

More or less. Just add a mushroom cloud and OHK in the blast radius.
We already have grenades with World War II fuses in them. Dust is so SciFi sometimes it's retro.

I would rather have a classic RPG. That would be fun, and it should be a heavy weapon!
The new commandos should have a better paint job. Look at the Amarr one!

you could make it "eve modern" by making the point of the arrows have super heated plasma edges like nova knives. and maybe some kinda technology in the bow that makes the arrows pass through shields. or maybe that's silly... hmmm...

As an archer I'd LOVE to have bows in DUST 514, so long as they were future orientated somehow as a bow, string and pointy stick isn't really inline with the game's context.

There are a number of very large problems with bows and reasons we stopped using them in real life. First and foremost is training, it takes a long time to learn to use a bow and develop the muscles for it. Second is rate of fire which is absolutely abysmal compared to firearms. Thirdly is you can only make a bow so strong (aka, there IS a limit to draw weights) - even with super advanced futuristic materials there is a point where more of the potential energy gained from drawing a bowstring is converted into heat or sound than it is to actually propelling an arrow. Oh and have you ever seen an arrow in flight, they're not exactly graceful things with how they wobble about. And when you have dropsuits that can shrug off 7000m/s sniper rifle rounds I don't think that a bow's conventional velocities are going to do much, even with 'advanced' payloads.
There are much, much more sound delivery systems for weapon payloads, even if the payload is 'sharp object' like arrows or shurikens or the like - railguns are prettymuch a perfect example, as they just use high powered electromagnets. |
