It's still outperformed by all other weapon variants, but the difference isn't as painful anymore.

I noticed this too. Trying to do the Event with a Caldari Commando + MagSex. Met another heavy. Took forever to get through the shields.
I have to say... this feels great. It now matters if you chose a shield tank or an armor tank. It does really make a difference now. Not like before when it didn't matter and you died against every weapon in a matter of seconds.

Plasma Rifle? I mean, hell, look at the 'Exile' assault rifle in your assets; it is even called Plasma Rifle.
To the OP: Assault Rifles were never all that terrible, just not as good as the Rail - Combat. The Rail Rifle's extra 50 milliseconds charge time to 300 milliseconds hurt it's close quarter capabilities more than I had suspected. With people not dying as quickly, the AR's rate of fire + damage is more meaningful. Mostly, I think it is just because every Gallente Assault is now using it they are realizing "this thing doesn't suck as much as I thought." Every game that has a type of metagame has something that is incredibly powerful... but no one uses it because there are options that are more favorable. With more people running Assault Rifle, more people see that it kills them so more people run Assault Rifle.

Hybrid - Blasters are an anti-shield weapon thus taking a 10% penalty to armor damage.
As a Caldari assault, AR people scare the poo out of me.
