Recently, I have heard a lot of people complaining about how hard it is to use the Minmitar Commando and Sentinel. Like any minmitar suit, these are very specialized roles that must be taken into effect when speccing into them.
The Minmitar Commando isn't bad. Your just not using it right. I've witnessed Minmitar Commandos charging into battle with their automatic CRs as if their gallente sentinels with proto HMGs.
THIS IS NOT HOW YOU RUN THE MINMI COMMANDO. The suit grants you a bonus to projectile and explosive weapons. This doesn't mean you carry a swarm launcher at all times, because the bonus is negligent. The MD and CR are ideal for this loadout and in order to maximize it's effectiveness, you'll have to do the following:
The Basics:
Commando suits in general are more difficult to use because of the playstyle that is required. A bad commando will go negative every match, a great commando can hold a point down by himself. Amarr Commando's with laser rifles and scramblers can nail any team from a range and completely ravage a battlefield. Gallente commando's are extremely skilled in CQC, while Caldaris are geared more towards ranged combat, IMO, second to the Amarr Commando.
The minmitar heavy suits are the fastest out of all the heavy suits, by a comfortable margin. This, however does not mean that you play it as an assalt. The minmitar commando is meant for POINT DEFENSE and FLANKING. Vantage points on domination maps can turn the tides of an entire match as you can single handedly clear them off of high ground and rain hell on them from above with the mass driver. The combat rifle is for CQC when flanking if your not playing point defense, but IN NO WAY, is this suit meant for frontal assault. That is the job of the Gallente commando. Minmi has speed with the sacrifice of eHP, but it also has bonuses to two very versatile weapons. When used together, the minmitar commando can absolutely dominate.
What you'll need:
Minmitar Commando's rely on their speed for flanking abilities, but they also can rely on eHP (if needed) to play point defense. Biotics are extremely important to Minmitar and if your not specced into biotics, then hop on it. Damage Modifications are also crucial to the success of the minmitar commando as the damage is what sets it apart from medium frames, dishing out damage and suppressing the opposing team. If your using an armor plate, I suggest using a kin cat to compensate for the moving penalty. IMO, one armor plate always helps the minmi commando as the base HP, a lot of the times will not cut it. Damge mods are always necessary, and I always have one kin cat handy at my supply.
PROFICIENCY IN THE MAIN WEAPONS FOR MINMITAR PLAYS A HUGE ROLE IN IT'S EFFECTIVENESS. IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT, GET IT.
The Tactics:
The Minmitar Commando is the scout of heavy frames. You have to play conservatively in order to maximize it's effectiveness, which is why vantage points are always crucial. Most points that you'll be trying to reach will only be accessible by dropship (Cat walks, ledge on KotH style dom map, etc.), which is the only difficult part of this tactic. The mass driver is the most effective when flanking or when you have higher ground. Do NOT use it for solos unless your using it to finish someone, or dancing with a scout. MDs are very effective weapons when used correctly and can play a huge role in your team winning or not. Don't use it as a main weapon, use it's area of denial to your advantage while you rip everything apart with your CR.
If you follow these set of rules, you can't help but improve with the minmitar commando. It is not meant to be a tank, it's meant to be a damage machine with great AoD abilities. No other commando will stand up to you one one one in CQC except for Gallente. The main weakness I've found, is battling long range with any time of Amarr Commando. Laser rifles are hell to deal with.
Note: These tactics only apply when playing point defense or playing domination. Skirmish tactics are not included simply because I do not run skirmish.
meh.

I heard that profile dampening min commandos and using plasma cannons was the ultimate way to go.
On another note, the commandos may push you towards a certain set role, but the best fit out there is the one tailored to your play style. If you want to be an assault commando, then go be an assault commando. If you want to use swarms, use swarms. If you want to duel flaylock then duel flaylock. Just play how you want to play. |
