Hello to all you dusters, mercs, tryhards, qqers, forum warriors and any other title that I forgot to mention. I do apologies if I forgot your category.
Anyway, I joined up on this game because of a friend of mine. They explained the game and it just seemed awesome. The setup was nice with the races and the backstories for each of them. Ended up going with minmatar as my avatar picture would indicate.
Now, my first game was absolutely amazing. I had a blast. Ended up going 49/0/7 according to the afteraction thing, the numbers being kills assists and deaths respectively. I said well that was cool. I may have a chance to actually have fun in the game and be a decent player for once in my life.
So I immediately left the academy. The very next game I encountered the problems with the game for newer players. The pure wall of should have gotten here earlier newb that is tanks, prototype suits, and all the various things that make this game purely infuriating.
Well I got into a commando suit and my next 10 games are consistent 3-5 kills and 10 deaths...this is terribly depressing. Is there anything I can do or is the way the game works. Likely some people will say "get gud"...those people are in my opinion assholes not fit to refill my mug or load my mags for my weapon.
Any help is much appreciated... |

Some of us want this fixed, some of us want to stomp on your face. This is how the game is, but I feel it shouldn't be like this. But I say if you like the game stick wih it, in half a years time you won't be getting stomped as much. But it is a rough, and very long road ahead.

Sorry to hear the post academy games in here are going bad for you friend. Unfortunately its going to involve a little bit more of the frustrating grind to get your core skills up to anywhere near the level you need to survive on the battlefield. Getting a squad going with a few people will increase your odds somewhat but I can only imagine what things are like for new academy graduates in here atm. Stick with it though. It will get better...I think/hope...at some stage anyway.

This is exactly why academy battles leave new players with the wrong impression of the game. This is also why many stop playing the game afterwards. I guess for now you can just try to develop your own tactics. Definitely squad up with people to see what role interests you the most.
LOL from your K.D. it seems like this is an alt O_o But if you want advice from great players you can join the " Learning Coalition" . It's a channel where everyone is willing to help :)

In terms of Sp, I think that when starting, it is best to get to advanced level the suit of your choice for the increased module slots, and then work on weapons and modules until you use all of your power grid and computer processing unit, and then work on engineering and electronics.
In terms of play, I think that commandos probably die more because they have a high scan profile, and not amazing hp. So they will show up on everyone's radar, and die as easily as medium suits. They can't effectively flank people as well as most other suits.
If this game was fun, I wouldn't be playing it.

Your main focus should b 2 earn isk & sp, that way u gain access 2 bettr suits, gear & weapons. I would suggest skilling up on ur dropsuit enhancements, particularly shields & armor, as this affects and adds bonuses 2 all & any dropsuits, including ur starter fits. Also skill up a weapon 2 advanced, say the AR 4 example, & switch out ur regular AR in ur starter fit. This lets u run ur startr with an advanced weapon which is obviously bettr than a regular weapon, but more importantly, it lets u build up more isk as u are jst spending 2 replenish that weapon & not the whole suit. Roll with this untill u earn enough isk & sp to run bettr suits w/ bettr modules & weapons., but u must accept the fact u will die! Once u accept that while knowing u are still an earning an adequate amount of isk, u will b ok. & remember, the more u do on the battlefield, such as hacking & destroying equipment in addition 2 killing, the more isk & sp u will earn! |

Good Luck! Not an alt, the ar that they give you just has 0 recoil. It makes me laugh. I come from games like rainbow six where if you fire sustained bursts youll likely be pointed at the cieling. |

You might want to join a corp. I just stuck through thin and thick so if you're going to solo, you're going to have to know how to choose your targets. Starter Minmatar are not good, but not bad, in my opinion. You can regenerate shields quickly, so you'll want to be constantly running. You'll, also, want to get your Dropsuit Upgrades up early. It might be boring and seem like they don't help out at first, but in the long run, they can be the difference between life or death.
I suggest buying a few militia heavy frames and light frames to also get the feel of the other classes to see which one suits you better. You might be a better heavy, or a better scout.
Running Factional Warfare allows you to use advanced equipment early and cheaply from their respective factions so you can try out a load of other stuff that aren't militia.
Good luck o7 |

Honestly, the best way to "get good" is to get experience - both in the sense of the in-game skill points which give you various passive bonuses depending on what you train up and in terms of actual practical experience in the game. Honestly, no amount of typing things to look for can replace the feel of playing the game.
It also doesn't really hurt that the game has regular updates which thoroughly redefine the gameplay and can in some cases essentially rebuild the entire metagame around a new released version.
This latest update, for example, was followed by a heavy nerf to a few modules that many vehicle pilots relied on quite heavily, and also majorly improved the effectiveness of Scout suits in several ways, including the addition of cloaking technology which Scouts get a significant fitting bonus for. Many players are using Scout suits because of these advantages, and because the new cloak is best-suited to a Scout, but a lot of these players are bad at using the tools provided, and are easy prey for players who actually look around and know what to keep an eye out for (pro-tip: Blue shimmery things are players. If it doesn't light up blue or green on your radar, shoot it). |

Academy is one of CCP's main concerns from what has been said multiple times...
Many people have asked for Academy to include more Tasks or quests for the participants to do before they could graduate... Or a percentage... etc...
Like: Dropping an Uplink and Have 2 team mates spawn on them
Use a Nanite Injector to Pick up 10 Team mates, Have 5 Team mates that Survive like after for 1 minute.*Hint*
Dropping a Nanohive and having more then 2 Team mates get Ammo resupply from it.
Calling in Militia Dropship staying in the air for 5 minutes, Have a team mate inside for 1 minute. Be A dropship gunner for 1 minute...
Call in a Militia Tank and Kill 5 people with it, Kill 10 Vehicles.
Call in a LAV And travel X mount of distance.
Resulting in Playstation Bronze Trophies or something.. Neat..
This list really could be at CCP's imaginations end with how far DUST 514 has grown and will continue to grow in the years to come.
Jumping in any persistent title and competing directly with players there for months to sometimes years longer then you will always be a challenge... But Steel sharpens steel...... The harder your competition and the more you get results and kills and learn the somewhat complex game. The better overall your performance in Equipment, Suits and Vehicles That cost more ISK investment and hurt more when lost.
It's a brutal Learning Curve as are all CCP games, Hopefully changes in the future will lessen the burden. DUST 514 is socially connected to EVE and thus enjoy's it's many social conveniences. Researching a corporation that fit's your aspirations in the New Eden Universe Is always a good investment. It will allow you to gain easier access to Squads, Team mates that are looking out for their Corp-mates generally, Valuable first hand experience and knowledge.. And maybe something to fight for beyond character progression? |

Think of Dust as an ocean, and that you are a new born fish spawn.
There are bigger and better sharks and killer whales out there than you. So if you try to take them head on, you'll get eaten. BUT if you try to latch on to the bigger fish like one of those sucker-fish species, you can earn needed nutrition and eventually grow to become a big, bad killerfish yourself.
This means that your main source of warpoints (and ultimately skillpoints and isk) should not come from the number of kills you try to get (because they won't be many) but rather how you support your other team members who might just be better killers than you are now.
You earn 25 points each time someone uses a drop uplink that you've placed. 60 points for every person you revive from death (thats more than you get for a kill). 15 points for every enemy you manage to scan, that someone else kills. 25 points for a set amount of armor that you repair with a rep tool, and 35 if your rep tool saves the life of the person you're repping. Hacking is also a great source of warpoints. (play skirmish for lots of hacks)
With this knowledge in hand: try to create an economic fit which you can support other team members as much as possible, while saving up skillpoints for your slayer skills. |

Welcome and yes - you have my sympathy! You get out of DUST what your are willing to put in I think. I'm at 11m SP and had all of your concerns for the opening months of play. In the last couple of months I have seen a definite improvement in my stats. I think you just have to accept you are going to die a lot - think of it as the Demon's Souls of FPS games.
Use squad finder - it's a fact of DUST that playing in a squad or even attaching yourself to a group of players in battle will greatly enhance your chances of staying alive and picking up kills. Don't ignore that - if you want to improve you need to try and work as a team. If you spot someone hacking - cover them. If you spot someone in a one on one - finish off the enemy for him.
There are snipers, invisible scouts and proto-heavies EVERYWHERE. Keep moving - don't make yourself a standing target and that means from the second you spawn.
Other advice - fit your favourite weapon to a starter dropsuit and use that. Keep it ISK cheap and you won't run out. Do this until you can afford enough SP to skill into the Advance Level dropsuit of your choice. By that point you should see an upswing in your stats as you will naturally improve your game skill as you play. It sounds like (from your academy stats) you are a pretty damn good fps player so I imagine with some hard graft you will one day be a top DUST player. Hang in there!
