I can agree with this. If a new player get over the initial slaughter-fest and learn the system it can be played very casually (I know I do). But it is not a game you simply download and expect to immediately dominate (well, if they DO, they will most likely uninstall very quickly)
CCP needs to drastically improve the NPE, but we all know this already... |

I think it depends on what is meant by casual. You could be a casual player who has been playing Dust for the last year. If so you have probably built up the SP and Knowledge to do quite well running solo in battle depending on your natural skills and internet speed.
However, if you are new and a casual player then no this game is harsh almost beyond belief for a lobby fps. You, as a new player, can play smart and get the drop on that vet but if they are in proto then they can tank your shots turn around and out DPS you if their skill level is not dissimilar to your own then they will likely win the 1 v 1. |

If you start a match already in progress your payout will be very low.

bamboo x wrote:CCP NEEDS AN ADVANCED GEAR ONLY MODE
BUT THEY'RE TOO STUPID TO DO IT
A lot of people are loving ALL CAPS lately.
While it would help rid a lot of stompers who rely on their gear, what about those people with genuine skill or at least maxed passives that just like to stomp. A squad of vets in ADV gear will still annihilate the players who are there because their gear forces them to be.
By SP wouldn't work either. Two players with 20mil SP. One is laser focused on a specific role, not deviating one iota from plan. The other likes to experiment and be a jack of all trades, SP spread thinly across a multitude of roles. Regardless of player skill, the former has a distinct advantage.
Yes matchmaking needs to be better. Doing it by gear or SP will present many of the same problems we have now, and the only way to counter will be when you unlock PRO tier. Of course by that point the ADV stompers will be the least of your worries, you're back on the bottom rung. |

I think the correct term would be if it is accessible to new players the fact is no it is not since player retention is low for new gamers . But is the game decent for casual play? Yes and so is virtually every lobby based FPS is. |

Didn't know I agreed with this statement until I read it.
You make a good point. CoD and similar games aren't my cup of tea, but put a controller in my hands and I'll happily waste an hour or two. An FPS is an FPS, regardless of quality or depth. |

Agreed. I think you have to have "balls of iron"tm, to stick with this game, if youre a casual gamer. You can play it casually, but you will certainly not play dust as obviously intended. It would be cool if via PvE, there would be a casual-friendly aspect introduced to dust. I wait for that. In the meantime just dont try to kill anything and you will be okay.
For us there are a few casual "gamemodes" available: 1. Hide, hack, run and hide again (run fast!) 2. Sniping (Rifle or Railgun, your choice) 3. Logi (the Orbitals will be reserved for you) |

Casual game? Hmm..not really. I don't think any game is a "casual game" if I was a developer or part of the concept team I would hate any of my work to be considered "casual" because of the effort and money and time I have invested in this "Game". Now, a gamer can be considered "casual" because of the level of competition in the gamer or the time he or she dedicates to a game. :)

I agree that it depends on what you mean by casual. DUST sits at the intersection of a fairly deep RPG and a traditional multiplayer FPS. People that like RPGs but don't have a lot of time for gaming each week (adults, professionals, parents, students--who actually go to class, etc.) can actually do quite well in this game due to the passive SP system. You could put in a few hours/week and be very competitive SP wise (especially if you're running boosters). So from that perspective it is incredibly casual friendly (moreso than most time-suck MMOs).
If by casual, you mean players who are shallow and flaky, then no. DUST has considerable depth and requires a reasonable investment of mental effort to make smart decisions.
I do agree that the NPE is garbage though.
Best PvE idea ever!
