Never. It will never compete with the popular modern FPS shooters because this game is a niche game for those who like to get dressed up in leather, ball gag themselves, and let a fat hairy italian guy named bruno whip them with a cat o' nine tails...

At it's foundation DUST has elements and mechanics that no other mainstream military FPS will ever have. Once the minute to minute gameplay is further refined, more content added, PvE, NPE and a stronger EVE link, the game will **** all over other FPS games. However, it won't reach their playerbase because simple things please simple minds and DUST isn't simple.
But yeah, DUST will surpass the rest because it builds upon itself rather than reinventing itself every year.

I'd settle for Dust being fun and at least relevant at some point. Maybe 5-10 years down the road.
I tried to put a level into Amarr Commando once, but got a server notification saying "Why?"

No way will it COMPETE, but it IS more FUN. That's all that matters.
It MIGHT compete with MMO RPG's though.

The only hope of that, is if someone with half a brain finally get's put in charge of the game. Also if they hire at more than 10 people to work on the thing, who put more time in other than when they are on the john and do some developing while taking a poop....
