Hi there, I am a casual dust player (dont laugh ... yet), and have trouble for a few days now finding my style for 1.8. Got stomped in every one of my 8 matches now (K/D averaged 2/8). I even got a friend to play with me for 2 matches, but well, I dont have to tell you he wont play again in the immediate future...
To clarify: I play since the first days of uprising, jumped from 16 to 19mio SP last week (thanks for the SP boost btw) and play about 1-3 matches a day on irregular times. So because of said time-limitations I have trouble playing in squads (it typically takes a few matches to find a good one, then I am usually back to real-life).
I would like to have your opinions on where do you see my place in Dust as it is now. Do I have a chance not getting stomped with my limited time investment, while playing solo? Or am I just outta luck?
I still have to try out a variety of roles, tried Sentinel and Commando and didnt get far engaging the stomper teams directly. I could go to play more indirectly, avoiding engagement with the enemy entirely ... in an FPS. I dont think this is in the spirit of FPSs, not shooting at all (the only winning move is not to play?) So what would you advise? |

Well Dust still needs a lot of work when it comes to Matchmaking....
Atleast try to have a 6 man squad for any match type. Join the FW channels and so many other channels that are out there. Solo is not going to be fun |

I gotta try. My Problem is, as stated, little time for gaming, compared to others. So waiting 15 minutes for a squad to get going means one less match for me... |

That is a problem for some, not being able to invest two to three hours a day hurts but isn't something that being in a big corp can't fix. It is difficult, I just passed 20M the other day and know where you are coming from but that one missed match to be in a good squad with mercs who are there to help you and let you help them makes all the difference. Don't get discouraged because it does take time to get better with limited in game time but knowing your strong suit and then playing off of it in a good squad makes all the difference.

Since none of these matches matter, everyone is a casual player in DUST.

There can be a place for the casual player but you will miss out on the social aspect of the game. Use the squad finder and take what you can get from the squad if you want to squad as you really don't have the time to play.
You can do well in a logistics role without a squad(lots of WP).
I find running as a scout fun at times(avoiding the main conflict, dropping uplinks, sneak attacks). I haven't played scout much in 1.8 but it seems to be just as good(although uplink nerf sucks).
You may enjoy sniping or tanking which can be done solo(K/D up). |

According to the five or so leet hardcore tryhards that will be left in this game before it gets cancelled for feeding them rather than the masses GÇô no, there is no place for the casual gamer in this game. Beer and scotch help me though.
I like to keep in mind that this player base is largely made up of people I wouldn't have anything to do with in real life. At least here I get to shoot them and get away with it.

I play solo (much to the chagrin of my corpmates) all the time. You really have to think differently when you play solo. You can't count on anyone. But, knowing that, plan and play accordingly.
There's a huge misconception that better geared players are necessarily better. They're not. They just have more health and stronger weapons. But what really matters is the player behind the suit. I routinely run standard/militia fits when I play solo, and I can usually kill 2-3 people before I die one. Why?
I play smart. I don't charge people, because I don't expect that anyone is going to cover me, pick me up, rep me, etc. I plan my fights. I look for opportune targets. I play with cover, and only hack/run out when *I* know I'll be safe. Above all, I don't get frustrated.
What else I'd recommend for the solo player is pick up a logi role that you like (probably not scanning, since that's a group effort) and run Logi suits. Logistics is always needed on the battlefield, now more than ever given the equipment nerfs. That Caldari-buffed hive will give your team that much more advantage, while a Minmatar-enhanced tool can seriously increase your teams' survival and funnel WP your way.
You just have to play smart. Dust can be very casual friendly, as long as you realize the limits of a solo queue. Just remember that there's other casual, solo players on the other team, and they likely will not be playing as smart as you. Your gear and skills mean something to your survival, but your brain means everything to it. Keep this in mind.

I-¦m also a casual player. Dont play more than maybe 2-3 times per week.
A tip to gain some extra SP while not playing are passive boosters, they really help.
It also helps to log on and get the +6000 SP every day, even if you dont have time to play a match.
Also, do not spec into a gimped dropsuit and/or weapon. You should focus on cookie cutter builds. I will help you get some good stuff going if you want to.
Drop it like its hat.

I guess it depends on your priorities. Leaderboards and K/D? FW? Just having fun shooting and being shot in pubs? Full disclosure: I may be the worst player in DUST existence ;) so take my ramblings with a grain of salt; but with that said, I'm having a blast this build. I'm still in starter corp, mostly because I don't want to feel obligated to a group with my schedule as it is. I might be able to get in 3-5 games on a good night followed by a week or so down time depending on work load. I've been here since CB and I miss terribly the auto squad matches that dumped us all together. Even if no one had a clue, SL commands directed them all well enough.
Obviously I just run solo. Yeah, I take an obvious hit for it but I've adapted as best as I know how without resorting to redline sniping or tanking. With the recent SP rewards and having saved a few mil on my own, maxing out core skills and focusing strictly into commando/sentinel and scout I find that I may have a great combo for my limited play style. With a vizium I can keep back at a decent range with relative cover and take out a few before I'm overwhelmed, then fall back on the new ion pistol (which IMHO, has a powerful charged blast). Dropping a nanohive at least gains some WP. I can jump to HMG if I want to get close and dirty, and with this expansion I've found there are just enough rep logis out there to top me off in tight spots. Then I've got the shotty scout to just play with running uplinks and being a pest. With passive scans and profile damp finally filled in, I've had a lot off fun running up on reds before they see me on TACNET. Honestly, even without the cloak I've been able to run into small groups to take one or two down before the others see me. Let me be clear: I am not going out of my way to flank here. I don't know if they're glued to the minimap looking for red pings or what, but they're not seeing me for some reason. Hard to believe I've found groups as bad, if not worse than me!
My point is, it's taken me several builds to find suit and loadout combos that so far really feel comfortable. I know you're not asking about that specifically, but I do feel it is important for me to be able to endure solo play in a game where teamwork is encouraged, if not required. I've played scout for a while now so I'm pretty comfortable with him. With the gift of respec I've been able to pull my wasted SP from random logi and assault test builds to focus strictly on these three suits and all supporting skills. I am having fun again, my K/D has improved (remember the disclaimer above: I still suck), and even in my limited roles, I do now feel I am contributing to the team with strategic uplinks and shotty flanks. Now that may also have to do with the fact that there is simply more variety on the field this week than in that last several months and it may all settle back to what it was once the shine fades. I hope it stays because variety is good. I hated playing the AR game.
Anyway, I hope there's something of use in that blob of text up there. If not, well, it was a distraction from the day job for a few minutes so thanks I guess? lol.
all the best,
- me.

Being in larger corporations with decent sized communities established within... Will get you full groups rather quick.
Not only that but usually your more inclined to help and watch backs for corporation members while pubbing.
Corporations are much like Guilds in any MMO game... They bring you nothing but benefits if they are decent and active. |

I play 1 or 2 games a night if I even get on, I always loose my daily activity bonus and haven't capped in I don't know how long. I understand where your coming from, but like others have stated before me, use squad finder or join a reasonably active corp. But if you don't have the time and have to run solo, just play like it. I like running FW solo idk why maybe because not everyone agrees on which faction to choose.
