For the last few weeks, I just can't stop thinking about how we were told trees were coming to DUST, and here we are, a year later... and still playing on barren, crater-pocked desert-like landscapes (or tundra, when it's snowy).
Benefits of having Trees:
- They would add beauty to the the landscape.
- In thick-ish patches (I'm picturing patches the size of a socket full of trees! a veritable forest) Tanks and other vehicles would be unable to get to you, and find it extremely difficult to find you under a canopy of trees!
- They would add a lot of variation to the current maps, and make them feel like actually different planets.
- Perhaps different planets could have different variations of trees, some like giant mushrooms, others tangly, spindly things... others gaint redwood-like trees! this would vastly add to the immersion, much like how flying near a sun in EVE and seeing just how immense they are makes you feel!
- if handled properly, we could end up randomly playing on maps that seem like the forests of Endor!
- They are a relatively simple cover mechanic, which this game SORELY needs.
No one ever brings up trees in DUST, but I feel, if implemented properly, and not a scraggly, lone tree every 60 meters or so, then we could be in for a dramatic, and very welcoming gameplay change! |

Large Plant life was eradicated when the EVE gate collapsed. We also lost the ability to mantle, slide down hills and lie on our bellies.

I would assume an amarrian district would be something like that. |

this is cool has long has they give the trees hit points and are removed from the battle field when they are out of hit point like installations.
I don't even know why I bother.

That would be amazing! We can hope. I don't think it'll happen on Unreal 4 though. PS4 port? No problem. The problem is the trees need to be somewhat animated. if not they look like fake plastic and it's too cartoonish. |

As much as I'd love to see it, trees are very high-poly, and one of the biggest limitations in what they can do in DUST is the polygon count. I'd rather see them do so much more other than adding trees right now.

With the terrain already having issues dropping you through it, glitching you halfway into walls and reviving you in the floor...sure, I can see death by tree.

can the ps3 handle it?
The way i see dust moving (if it ever decides to move forwards), is similar to planetside2. however, planetside2s requirements are nuts. So i question if plantlife etc is viable for ps3s.
frankly, 1.8 has frustrated me beyond belief. so, whatever, might just quit.

I would argue that games like Halo and MAG were far more graphically intense than DUST. Those games had trees and vegetation, and on relatively huge maps. Hell, MAG did it with 256 people on the battlefield at once. |
